The Patriots' losing streak is over. And so is the Dolphins' undefeated start.Tom Brady threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns and the New England Patriots handed Miami its first loss of the season in a 38-7 rout on Sunday. It denied the Dolphins (3-1) their first 4-0 start since Hall of Fame coach Don Shula's last season in 1995."I thought we got what we needed from our team today Jonathan Jones Jersey Salute to Service ," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said.Brady improved to 15-1 as a starter against Miami."We hadn't played well in the last weeks," Brady said. "This game's great. But you've gotta turn the page."New England (2-2) may be doing that without one of its best players. Tight end Rob Gronkowski, one of Brady's favorite targets, left the game in the third quarter with a right ankle injury and did not return. It put a slight damper on an afternoon in which New England showed the kind of consistency on both sides of the ball that had been missing in back-to-back losses to Jacksonville and Detroit. Since 2002, the Patriots are 8-0 after back-to-back losses. In its two losses, New England's offense struggled to find its rhythm and sustain drives on third down.It did both Sunday, taking advantage of a Dolphins defense that couldn't seem to match the Patriots' speed.Running back James White finished with a rushing and receiving touchdown. Rookie running back Sony Michel also rushed 25 times for 112 yards and his first career touchdown. It was perfect timing after Rex Burkhead went on injured reserve last week with a neck injury.Miami struggled in every phase and looked very much like the team that has lost 10 straight road games to New England.Ryan Tannehill finished 11 for 20 for 100 yards and an interception. He was pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of Brock Osweiler. Osweiler connected with Frank Gore for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for Miami's lone score."Not a lot went right for us," Tannehill said.Miami was just 3 of 11 on third down and managed only 172 total yards. The Dolphins also had two turnovers and were whistled for 10 penalties, totaling 89 yards"I feel like it's nothing they did," running back Kenyan Drake said. "I felt like we out there and the penalties and all those things killed us."Miami had a strong start on defense, intercepting Brady on New England's second offensive series. But following a quick Dolphins' punt Ja'Whaun Bentley Jersey , the Patriots bounced back with a 55-yard TD pass from Brady to Cordarrelle Patterson to take a 10-0 lead. The 55-yard pass was New England's longest play of the season. Patterson caught the pass over his shoulder along the sideline and stutter-stepped past safety T.J. McDonald to find a clear path to the end zone. Then about midway through the second quarter, Tannehill fumbled a snap to begin a series that was recovered by Patriots linebacker Kyle Van Noy on the Dolphins 2 . White ran it in for a touchdown on the next play to make it 17-0 .The Patriots then ended the half with a 15-play, 85-yard drive capped by an acrobatic touchdown grab in the end zone by Phillip Dorsett.Dorsett, who had no catches in last week's loss to Detroit, finished with four catches for 55 yards.GORDON DEBUTSPatriots receiver Josh Gordon made his debut Sunday, marking his first playing time in New England since his trade from the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 17.Gordon made his first reception at the 7:27 mark of the first quarter, hauling in a 13-yard grab.New England dealt for the embattled receiver about 48 hours after the Browns announced their intention to cut ties with him, saying they had "reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward."Gordon was inactive in Week 3 in New England's loss to Detroit with a hamstring injury and was limited in practice this week.He finished with two catches for 32 yards."I have no doubt I can take advantage of this opportunity," Gordon said. "I'm more than blessed, I'm extremely grateful to be in this scenario. I think the only thing right for me to do is take advantage of it."MR. 200Dolphins running back Frank Gore became the eighth running back in NFL history to appear in 200 NFL games.Gore took the field in the first quarter of Miami's matchup with the Patriots. With 14,124 rushing yards Authentic Isaiah Wynn Jersey , Gore entered the day ranked fourth on the NFL's all-time rushing list behind only Emmitt Smith (18,335), Walter Payton (16,726) and Barry Sanders (15,269).SPREAD IT AROUNDPatterson became the 70th different player to catch a touchdown pass from Brady. It tied Brady with Vinny Testaverde for the most players with a touchdown reception from a single quarterback in NFL history.INJURIESDolphins center Daniel Kilgore left the game in the first half with an arm injury. Safety Bobby McCain left with a knee injury.Patriots defensive lineman Adam Butler was helped off the field in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Elandon Roberts also limped off late.UP NEXTThe Dolphins visit Cincinnati next Sunday. The Patriots host the Colts on Thursday night. The New England Patriots may not have enjoyed the flashiest of victories against the Buffalo Bills on Monday, but at the end of the day they still defeated a division rival on the road by three scores. The 25-6 victory wrote plenty of stories – from the defense playing one of its best games of the year to Josh Gordon not seeing his snap count reduced for disciplinary reasons – what is arguably most encouraging is the team accomplishing some season firsts along the way.The Patriots did not give the ball awaySo far this season, the Patriots have been uncharacteristically sloppy when it comes to ball security: the team’s offense and special teams units turned the football over a combined 13 times through their first seven games – the most for a Bill Belichick-coached team since 2004. And while one game is not enough to proclaim that New England has officially turned the corner, it still is encouraging to see the team finally not give the ball away for a full game.Buffalo failed to reach the end zoneYes, the Bills have one of the worst offenses in the NFL. And yes, New England played against a third-string quarterback. But you can only play who you line up against, and versus the group Buffalo fielded yesterday Limited Danny Etling Jersey , the Patriots defense did its job very well. While the home team was able to gain 333 yards of offense, it failed to reach the end zone even once and had to settle for two field goals – the first time all season that an opponent did not score a touchdown against Brian Flores’ unit. Furthermore, New England’s defense allowed just 4 of 14 third down attempts to be converted and also registered two takeaways. Devin McCourty’s interception broke a 40-game streakThe second of the team’s defensive turnovers was a 84-yard pick-six: safety Devin McCourty read quarterback Derek Anderson perfectly, undercut the pass, and returned the interception to the end zone to ice the game in New England’s favor. Not only was it the Patriots’ first defensive score of the season, it also broke a 40-game drought – the longest in the NFL – and served as the icing on the cake that was yesterday’s performance. While not all worked well yesterday – just look at the running game’s ineffectiveness, or the continued inconsistency on special teams – the Patriots are still trending in the right direction in some areas. All that needs to be done now and heading into the bye week a little further down the line is build on those developments. Monday night was a first step.
Vikings to honor Tony Sparano before Saturday’s game On Saturday http://www.minnesotavikingsteamonline.com/laquon-treadwell-jersey , prior to their preseason contest at U.S. Bank Stadium against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Minnesota Vikings will pay tribute to their former offensive line coach, Tony Sparano.According to Courtney Cronin of ESPN, Sparano’s wife Jeanette, his daughter Ryan, and his son Tony, Jr. Womens Eric Kendricks Jersey , will serve as honorary captains for Saturday’s game. Tony Sparano, Jr., is the current assistant offensive line coach for the Jaguars. The family will be presented with a painting of Sparano, and a tribute video will be shown prior to the game, followed by a moment of silence.Former Vikings’ offensive lineman Joe Berger will also be given the honor of sounding the Gjallarhorn prior to kickoff of Saturday’s game. Berger played under Sparano on three different teams: the Dallas Cowboys from 2006 to 2008, the Miami Dolphins in 2010 and 2011, and the Vikings in 2016 and 2017.The Vikings are also wearing a decal on their helmets this season to honor Sparano’s memory.Sparano passed away just days before the start of Training Camp as a result of suffering cardiac arrest. The team delayed the official start of camp for a day so that the organization could attend his memorial service.Kickoff between the Jaguars and the Vikings is at noon Central time on Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium. If you want to see the tribute to Coach Sparano Customized Minnesota Vikings Jerseys , make sure you get there well ahead of time.Report: Minnesota Vikings waive K Daniel Carlson, will sign Dan Bailey After yesterday’s 29-29 tie with Green Bay, there was a lot of speculation on the fate of first year kicker Daniel Carlson, who was drafted in the first round and beat out Kai Forbath during the preseason. The speculation is over, apparently:Carlson, who was a little unsteady in preseason, missed three field goals yesterday www.authenticsminnesotavikings.com , including two in overtime. The last one was with just seconds remaining, and it was a 35 yard attempt that would have won the game for Minnesota, and capped an incredible comeback. To replace him, it looks like they’re going to sign former Dallas Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey:Bailey, who kicked for the Cowboys for seven years, has made 88% of his field goals for his career, and 99% of his extra points. He had his worst season last year Minnesota Vikings T-Shirt , making only 75% of his attempts, and went 26/28 on extra points as he battled a back injury and played in only 12 games. So, welcome to Minnesota, Dan Bailey. May the kicks be ever in your favor.
The Minnesota Sports Awards have named Vikings Head Mike Zimmer Coach of the Year for his work last season http://www.minnesotavikingsteamonline.com/kyle-rudolph-jersey , reports Lindsey Young from Vikings.com.After what many thought would be season ending loses with Sam Bradford and Dalvin Cook going down early in the season, Zimmer was able to turn things around and go 13-3 and make a run to the NFC Championship game.Vikings’ General Manager Rick Spielman was asked to speak about Zimmer and had nothing but praise for him and his work with the team.Coach Zimmer could not be on hand to accept his award. He and the team are getting ready to play the New Orleans Saints this Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium, but he did have a prerecorded message for those on hand.“Thank you for the honor of being selected as Minnesota Sports Awards Coach of the Year. I’m sorry I can’t be in attendance tonight; we have preparations for a huge New Orleans Saints game this week. I would also like to congratulate the other nominees. I have great respect for Coach Anderson and Coach Richter, and I’m proud of the work that they both do for the student-athletes in the state of Minnesota. We have great Vikings fans all around the state, and we need you to cheer for us again this weekend. Thank you.” Coming into their Week 9 contest, the Minnesota Vikings had never beaten the Detroit Lions at U.S. Bank Stadium, suffering an overtime loss in 2016 and a regulation loss in 2017. On Sunday afternoon, the Vikings’ defense did everything they could to ensure that it wouldn’t get to three in a row.Paced by a defense that set a new franchise record by sacking Matthew Stafford ten times and found the end zone themselves once, the Vikings overcame a lackluster offensive performance to take down their division rivals by a final score of 24-9.The Vikings wasted no time getting on the scoreboard http://www.minnesotavikingsteamonline.com/everson-griffen-jersey , marching down the field on their first drive of the game and getting into the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run by Latavius Murray to take a 7-0 lead. That was all the scoring in the first quarter, and a pair of Matt Prater field goals in the second quarter made the score 7-6. Then, Dalvin Cook announced his return from injury in a big way with a huge 70-yard run. That set up the Vikings’ second touchdown, as Kirk Cousins found Adam Thielen for a two-yard score.Minnesota added a Dan Bailey field goal just before halftime, and the home team went into the locker room with a 17-6 lead. There was no scoring in the third quarter, and the Vikings appeared to be looking to add more in the fourth quarter when Kirk Cousins attempted to pitch the ball to Cook, only to have Cook put it on the ground for a Lions recovery. Once again, however, the Vikings’ defense stood tall Womens Rashod Hill Jersey , and provided the dagger to Detroit’s hopes.Matthew Stafford was scrambling to his right, and attempted to pitch the ball to an unsuspecting Kerryon Johnson. The ball fell to the turf, and because it was pitched backwards, it was a live ball. Danielle Hunter alertly jumped on the ball, and rumbled 32 yards for a defensive touchdown for the Vikings, with Bailey’s extra point making it 24-6.The Lions did get a field goal from Prater with just over a minute to go, and that’s how it ended at U.S. Bank Stadium. The real story of this game was the Minnesota defense, as they made life miserable for the Lions’ offense all game. They sacked Stafford ten times, led by 3.5 for Hunter and 2.5 for Tom Johnson. Everson Griffen collected 1.5 sacks http://www.minnesotavikingsteamonline.com/harrison-smith-jersey , and Mackensie Alexander and Stephen Weatherly each picked up one. Sheldon Richardson was credited with half a sack to round out the total. The Lions could get nothing going on offense all afternoon, as the Minnesota defense just didn’t allow them any room to breathe. The one down stat from this one is that Adam Thielen failed to break his tie with Calvin Johnson for the most consecutive 100-yard receiving performances in NFL history. He had eight coming into this one, but the Lions held him in check, giving him just four receptions for 22 yards. He did, however, record a touchdown reception for the sixth consecutive game, so that’s a decent consolation prize, I suppose.Kirk Cousins had a very up-and-down game in this one. He had, by far http://www.minnesotavikingsteamonline.com/sheldon-richardson-jersey , his lowest statistical output as a Viking, completing 18-of-22 passes for just 164 yards, one touchdown, and one pretty inexplicable interception in the first half. Still, it was good enough in this one.On the receiving side, Laquon Treadwell actually led the Vikings with 37 yards on a pair of receptions. Kyle Rudolph had a pair of receptions for 28 yards, and Chad Beebe, making his NFL debut with Stefon Diggs on the sideline, caught three passes for 21 yards. Dalvin Cook had four receptions for 20 yards in his return Authentic Ben Gedeon Jersey , and Aldrick Robinson chipped in with a pair of catches for 20 yards. Latavius Murray also had one 16-yard reception.Dalvin Cook had a nice return in his first game since Week 4. He had the big 70-yard run, and finished with 89 yards on ten carries. Latavius Murray had 31 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, and Adam Thielen had a five-yard run.The Vikings move their record to 5-3-1, and will take their bye this coming week before returning to face the Chicago Bears in Week 11 at Soldier Field. The Lions fall to 3-5, and they will host those same Bears next week. The Minnesota Vikings get a huge divisional win in Week 9, taking down the Detroit Lions by a final score of 24-9 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Thanks to everyone that got their coverage of today’s game right here at The Daily Norseman!
Examining the roster ties between Patriots Limited Kevin Faulk Jersey , Dolphins ahead of Week 4 The Miami Dolphins are heading to Foxborough, and they’re packing some familiar faces along with them.Miami, standing atop the AFC East through three weeks of September, checks in with four former New England Patriots in the 53-man fold entering Sunday. And two of whom were 1,400 miles away as recently this spring and summer. But there are also a few ex-Dolphins to account for between the active roster, practice squad and injured reserve of New England. Here’s a glance through the roster connections leading up to the 1 p.m. ET divisional kickoff at Gillette Stadium.MIAMIBrandon Bolden, running back – Undrafted out of Ole Miss in 2012, Bolden would go on to accrue 686 snaps on offense and 1,400 snaps on special teams over the course of his Patriots tenure. A “four-down player,” as Patriots head coach often described him, Bolden appeared in 83 games through his six regular seasons with New England. He tacked on 15 playoff games and a pair of Super Bowl rings Antonio Garcia Jersey , as well. But the longest-tenured Patriots running back was released during September’s cutdown for the second consecutive year. And this time, Bolden elected to go south, signing a one-year, $790,000 contract with the Dolphins. The 28-year-old has been in for 70 percent of the snaps in Miami’s kicking game thus far into 2018.Danny Amendola, wide receiver – By way of the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams, Amendola signed a five-year pact with the Patriots in March 2013. A trio of restructures would arrive by 2017, but so would 57 career playoff receptions for 709 yards and six touchdowns, in addition to 106 yards on punt returns and another 213 on kick returns. “To me, he’s uncoverable Dont'a Hightower Jersey ,” Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said last fall. “You turn on the tape, he’s getting away from people no matter what the route, no matter who’s on him, no matter what’s called, leverage, distance – he’s just been so great for us ...” Amendola joined the Dolphins on a two-year, $12 million contract as free agency opened. He’s caught 11 of the 13 passes sent his direction for 100 yards to this point.AJ Derby, tight end – The converted QB via Iowa, Coffeyville Community College and Arkansas was selected by New England in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. Derby spent his rookie season with the Patriots on injured reserve, but entered into four games in his second season before being traded to the Denver Broncos in exchange for pick No. 163 overall in the 2017 draft. That pick would eventually be redistributed for restricted free-agent running back Mike Gillislee. As for Derby, he would eventually be claimed off waivers by Miami. The tight end has caught two passes over the past two weeks for 35 yards and his third career touchdown.Ted Larsen Authentic Joe Thuney Jersey Salute to Service , guard – A Patriots sixth-round pick out of North Carolina State in 2010, Larsen was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of his inaugural NFL preseason. He has made additional stops with the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears and penned a three-year deal with the Dolphins in March 2017. Larsen has started 10 of his 11 appearances for Miami since then. The center-slash-guard has started 75 career games.NEW ENGLANDChris Hogan, wide receiver – The nickname “7-Eleven” has been retired, but it had to start somewhere. And, as chronicled on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” six summers ago, that somewhere was Miami. Hogan signed with the Dolphins’ practice squad late in 2011 season, and after a four-catch preseason, returned for the initial week of the 2012 campaign. He’d move on to the Buffalo Bills and was signed by the Patriots as a restricted free agent in 2016. Hogan has caught 79 passes for 1,203 yards and 11 touchdowns in regular-season action for New England. The wideout has logged two 100-yard games through the Patriots’ last two playoff runs.Eric Smith, offensive tackle – Smith Limited Brandon Bolden Jersey , who signed to the Patriots’ practice squad after Labor Day weekend, originally entered the league as a Dolphins undrafted free agent in 2017. The Virginia product began his rookie year on Miami’s 53-man roster and returned to it after a stint on injured reserve, but did not make his regular-season debut. The Dolphins waived Smith ahead of the Sept. 1 cutdown deadline.Ulrick John, offensive tackle – Residing on New England’s injured reserve after suffering a foot injury that required surgery in the preseason finale, John spent parts of two years with Miami. The 2014 Indianapolis Colts seventh-rounder was claimed by the Dolphins on Halloween 2015 and appeared in two contests. John began 2016 on the team’s practice squad before joining the Cardinals and later the Green Bay Packers. The Patriots signed the 26-year-old tackle this April. The New England Patriots are officially out of the 10-point hole they found themselves in early in the second quarter. After a Cordarrelle Patterson touchdown on a kickoff return cut the team’s deficit to three points, New England’s next offensive possession ended with a touchdown as well – one that would not have been possible without a big fourth down conversion from Tom Brady to wide receiver Josh Gordon:Displaying great hands, athleticism and concentration to hold onto the football, Gordon was able to come down with the football to keep the drive alive. A few plays later – one of which a direct snap to running back James White that did not bring any success – New England was in the end zone once again. This time, it was a pass from Brady to White:White’s fifth touchdown of the season allowed the Patriots to get back on top again 21-17.
Jalen Ramsey has approached trash talking — both dishing it out and receiving it — with open arms for most of his football career. When initiating it he's been an equal opportunity offender Authentic Dwayne Allen Jersey , even when his words were aimed at possibly two of the best players to ever play their respective positions.Ramsey sent ripples across the league last month when he was asked by "ESPN The Magazine" for his opinion of Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski and said: "I don't think Gronk is as great as people think he is."The comments came months after the Jaguars' 24-20 loss to the Patriots in last season's AFC championship game, in which Gronkowski caught only one pass before being knocked out of the game with a concussion in the first half. That same game also saw Ramsey briefly exchange words with reigning MVP Tom Brady during pregame warmups. It's all added extra fuel to the budding rivalry as New England prepares to visit Jacksonville on Sunday."If that's how he feels, that's how he feels," Gronkowski said Wednesday. "It's a big game. ... I'm sure I'm gonna have opportunities go against him. And I'm sure he's gonna have opportunities to go against me."For his part, Ramsey has never backed down from his comments."I don't live my life with regrets, man. Things happen. I said what I said," Ramsey said after his comments went viral."I love the competitiveness. I love the trash talking. I love the challenge. I love literally everything about the game, so I have no regrets. ... Hey, I'm me: Unapologetic."Ramsey's teammates said his often-biting words are what make Ramsey the player he is.Trash talking is Limited Malcolm Mitchell Jersey , "part of his game," defensive lineman Calais Campbell said."I tell him all the time 'Man, hey, whatever you do just make sure that we're gonna back you up...We're gonna be there for you,'" Campbell said. "But I have nothing but confidence in Jalen. He's a very smart guy ... Very passionate. So I won't ever try to contain somebody and not let him be himself."Ramsey was a first-team All-Pro in his second year in the league last season, but had a relatively quiet AFC title game against New England. He finished with just two tackles as Brady engineered late-game heroics to erase a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit.Ramsey said recently that he thinks the biggest reason for the Jaguars losing that game was that they became too conservative.Of the talent of Brady, who exploited that conservatism, Ramsey told "GQ" magazine that he puts him in the category of quarterbacks who don't "suck.""I never want to suck," Brady said with a smile Wednesday. "So I never want to be in that category."Brady is expecting "an emotional environment" on Sunday against a defense that he considers one of the best in the AFC. He added that he thinks Ramsey is "a great young player." Brady said a little trash talk is part of the game."I think it raises everybody's game Devin McCourty Jersey , as long as it doesn't get to point where you do something stupid," Brady said. "I think emotion in football is critical."Jacksonville coach Doug Marrone said that any conversations he's had with Ramsey about his tendency to speak his mind would remain private. But Marrone was also quick to offer praise for both Gronkowski and Brady, whom he said were possibly the best to play the game at their positions. He said he isn't concerned about Ramsey's comments providing the Patriots bulletin board material."I mean, it is what it is," Marrone said. "We're all men and we've got to stand by what we say and you've got to speak for yourself and be able to do that. We've just got to go out there and play."Said Gronkowski: "I feel like this game you gotta keep your head on a swivel and be ready for anything."Notes: Rookie RB Sony Michel spoke to reporters for the first time since injuring his knee during training camp. He was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and said he was "doing all I can do" to be back in uniform for Sunday's game. "My mindset is to prepare as if I'm playing," he said. Michel, who was taken 31st overall in April's draft, is one of two Patriot first-round picks on the mend. Tackle Isaiah Wynn (selected 23rd overall) was lost for the season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in the preseason. RB Rex Burkhead remains in the concussion protocol after taking a blow to the head in last week's opener.Week 1 Patriots vs Texans: First-round rookie running back Sony Michel not expected to play The New England Patriots have one of the deepest offensive backfields in the NFL – and it looks as if its depth will be tested today when the team opens its 2018 regular season against the Houston Texans. According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, first-round rookie running back Sony Michel is expected to miss the contest which would have been his NFL debut:As Schefer notes Authentic Julian Edelman Jersey Salute to Service , Michel was listed as questionable on Friday’s final injury reported after being a limited practice participant all week long. The Georgia product, who was drafted by the Patriots with the 31st overall selection earlier this year, is dealing with a knee injury that cost him more than three weeks worth of practice time in training camp: Michel originally injured his knee on August 1 and did not return until August 27.The rookie missed all four of New England’s preseason contests and will now have to wait at least one more week for his first game action at the pro level. During his absence, Rex Burkhead and fellow offseason addition Jeremy Hill are projected to serve as the Patriots’ lead backs on early downs. James White, meanwhile, will again be the team’s primary receiving back.
Oakland and the Los Angeles Chargers both come into Sunday's game ranked in the Top 10 in total offense. The matchup between AFC West rivals is likely to come down to who has the greatest success running the ball. Both teams had a 100-yard rusher in their wins last week. The Raiders' Marshawn Lynch had 130 yards in a 45-42 overtime victory over Cleveland Cheap Melvin Gordon Jersey , while the Chargers' Melvin Gordon gained 104 yards on the ground in a 29-27 win over San Francisco .Lynch and Gordon are both ranked in the Top 10 in rushing. Lynch is fourth with 300 yards and has shown flashes of being back to the level he displayed in Seattle from 2011-14, when he had four straight 1,000-yard seasons. Gordon is seventh with 276 yards. Both players are showing they are physical runners in different ways. Lynch has generated 77.3 percent of his yards after contact according to SportRadar, the highest percentage among the top 24 backs. Gordon is tied for third in broken tackles with 12."There's not a lot of backs that can say they run the football like he does. He still has elusiveness and speed," Raiders coach Jon Gruden said about Lynch. "This guy likes the physical grind and I think he feeds off of it."Gordon is also making an impact in the passing game as he is tied for the Chargers' lead in receptions with 17. That has allowed him to lead the AFC in yards from scrimmage with 475."He's really done a great job as a receiver and really been a factor to make huge plays for us," Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said. "I think he has been driven to get his game to another level, and I think we're seeing the benefit to that. He's worked hard. He's studied it."Both teams are looking for a win to avoid falling to 0-2 in division games. Quarterback Philip Rivers said the Chargers need to start stringing together wins to avoid falling further behind unbeaten Kansas City."I think we're just playing a little better all the way around. A little more complementary all the way around," Rivers said. "But certainly, you know, this is no time to keep going win-loss, win-loss, win-loss. So it's an opportunity for us to get our second win in a row and get above .500 and keep going."Here are some other things to watch as the Chargers look for their third straight victory over the Raiders:CARR VS. RIVERSOakland's Derek Carr and Rivers have split their first eight meetings. Both are coming into the game with momentum.Carr is looking for his third straight 300-yard game, which would be the first time that has happened in his five-year career. Rivers has thrown 11 touchdowns Cheap Philip Rivers Jersey , tying for the most he has thrown in the first four games.PASS RUSH HELPThe Chargers are hoping defensive tackle Corey Liuget's return from a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance enhancers helps improve a pass rush that has struggled.Los Angeles has only eight sacks as Melvin Ingram has been frequently been double-teamed. Defensive end Joey Bosa will miss his fifth straight game due to a foot injury.ROOKIE TACKLESThe Raiders will have an untested tackle this week after right tackle Donald Penn was placed on IR with a groin injury. Rookie Brandon Parker will step in and team with fellow rookie Kolton Miller, who is on the left side protecting Carr. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this will be the first time since the 1970 merger that the Raiders will have two rookie tackles starting in a game.DEFENSIVE HELPThe Raiders hope the anticipated debut of cornerback Daryl Worley will help eliminate the big plays that have plagued the defense. Oakland has allowed a league-worst five 50-yard or longer plays and is tied for second worst with 23 plays allowed of at least 20 yards. Worley should provide a needed boost in the secondary as he returns from a four-game suspension for violating the league's policies on substance abuse and personal conduct.WHOSE HOME GAME?The Raiders left Los Angeles in 1994, but they still have a large and boisterous contingent of fans in the area. When the Raiders played a preseason game against the Rams at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Aug. 21, it sounded like a Raiders home game. Even though the StubHub Center seats only 27,000, it is likely the crowd will be predominantly silver and black. The Chargers have won five of their past six at StubHub, but it hasn't felt like a home-field advantage. Last Sunday's game against the 49ers appeared to have more San Francisco fans.AP Pro Football Writer Josh Dubow contributed to this story.Follow Joe Reedy at joereedy Arizona Cardinals coach Steve Wilks had a blunt answer when asked if offensive coordinator Mike McCoy's job is in jeopardy."I would say all our jobs are in jeopardy," Wilks said, "including mine if we don't win."Such is the mood of the first-year coach and his staff after the team's 27-17 loss at Minnesota dropped the Cardinals to 1-5 for the season. Now Arizona faces a quick turnaround to host the Denver Broncos, another struggling team at 2-4, on Thursday night. As has been the case all season, the problems for the Cardinals on Sunday were a sluggish offense and a defense unable to stop the run.Arizona managed 269 yards against the Vikings and remains last in the NFL in offense at 220.5 yards per game. The Cardinals offense came to life a bit in the fourth quarter as rookie quarterback Josh Rosen operated in an up-tempo game."It was very effective for us Cheap Keenan Allen Jersey ," Wilks said. "It's something that we've definitely got to consider. It's part of his comfort zone based off of college. We've got to do everything we can right now to get this offense going in the right direction."Rosen said the late-game success had something to do with Minnesota's defense."It's not necessarily that I like it or don't like it, it was just successful the little bit we did it," Rosen said. "I think the Vikings had a comfortable lead as well so they kind of took their foot off the gas a little bit and kind of let us get some underneath stuff. I think it's definitely something we can do or continue, but also you can't look too far into it, consider the situation in the game."Rosen had the best statistical game of his three starts, completing 21 of 31 passes for 208 yards with one interception. He acknowledged that he bears a big responsibility for the offense but as a rookie must realize his status with the coaching staff."You've got to earn respect. I think I'm in the process of doing that," Rosen said, "but I think we've got some great coaches and they're asking for feedback and I'm willing to give them that feedback but you've also kind of know your place as a rookie. I'm sort of finding the happy medium between taking as much control as you sort of deserve, but I'll never shy away."Another familiar problem was getting David Johnson involved. The running back has yet to have a breakout game and has acknowledged several mental lapses as he tries to grasp the new offense.Wilks said the problems in getting Johnson involved are many."We need to do a much better job up front as far as blocking, executing our assignments," he said. "We need to move him around more, try to find ways to get him out in space, different things to try to open it up."The Cardinals' problems up front have been worsened by injury. Right guard Justin Pugh has a hand injury and Mike Iupati left Sunday's game with an injured back.Wilks said he's awaiting results of an MRI on Pugh's hand."It could be broke Drew Kaser Jersey , it could be sprained," Wilks said. "We don't know."With his left hand in a cast, Pugh said later Monday that, while he couldn't talk about specifics of the injury, he intended to try to play Thursday night.Wilks, a defensive coach by background, said he's "definitely taken more attention to the offense and making sure we're doing the things we need to execute."But there are issues on defense as well. Arizona allowed 195 yards rushing against the Vikings."It's one or two guys not using their hands, getting out of their gaps, which is creating explosive plays," Wilks said. "Guys need to continue to work and execute their assignments."That's been a season-long lament in Arizona. Custom San Francisco 49ers Jerseys
Rules analysis: How was that not a safety? In the middle of the 3rd quarter of the game yesterday http://www.chargerscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-isaac-rochell-jersey , there was a play that was/is confusing to many football fans. If you’re a Chargers fan, you’re probably wondering why the team was not awarded a safety. Bills fans probably wonder why Nwosu wasn’t ejected for his devastating and injuring hit on Taiwan Jones. I’m not going to touch the latter question as it is likely going to be split down party lines whether you think it was a dangerous play, or an inadvertent football play. I can, however, try to answer the former. Here is the play in question:Breaking the play down into bullets:Marcus Murphy catches the punt but the ball is immediately separated by a hit from Michael Davis. The momentum from the hit drives the ball into the endzone where it is recovered by Taiwan Jones.Jones evades tackles by Kyle Emanuel, Adrian Phillips and Jatavis Brown, but Phillips does pull his helmet off in the process. Jones is then hit in the head and tackled by Uchenna Nwosu, losing the ball in the process. The first whistle sounds as Jones hits the ground clutching his head.A Chargers player picks up the football after the whistle. Here are some things that did not happen, which have bearing on the play:Murphy did not make a football move or establish himself as a runner. The back judge does not throw his bean bag to signal a loss of possession, confirming the previous bullet. Jones attempts to, but does not succeed at advancing the ball out of his endzone.PossessionI believe most of the confusion on this play comes from how Taiwan Jones reacts when he recovers the ball. He is very clearly trying to take the ball out of the endzone. His efforts http://www.chargerscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-austin-ekeler-jersey , along with being tackled in the endzone, naturally, would make you think he is trying to escape some consequence for being tackled in the endzone (i.e. a safety or touchdown). Whether he understood the situation or not, this is not the case. The confusion starts with Murphy. He is not ruled by the back judge to have had possession of the ball. So when he loses the ball, the punt has been muffed, not fumbled. This is important because it has bearing on the recovery. From the NFL Rulebook, Rule 9, Section 4, Article 1:Starting with (c), this would have been a touchdown if the Chargers had gotten the ball, but they didn’t. Part (b) better describes the situation Joe Barksdale Jersey , but doesn’t answer the question other than to state it would have been legal for Jones to advance the ball in that situation.SafetiesMost Chargers fans (myself included) were screaming at the TV that it should have been a Safety. A Bills player was tackled in his own end zone; that has to be a safety, right? From the NFL Rulebook, Rule 11, Section 5, Article 1:Part (b) and Note (2) are the important bits here. Impetus is a very physics-sounding word for the motion of the ball when not in the possession of a player. The assumption is that the offense is the one providing the impetus. Kaser provides the initial impetus when he kicks the ball downfield. Later, Davis provides further impetus by knocking the ball away from Murphy. This is the impetus that moves the ball into the endzone.Part (b) is very clear that the impetus needs to have come from the Bills for this to qualify as a safety. I do not think that anyone can say that the Bills caused the ball to end up in the end zone. Imagine a very similar situation we see from time to time: A punt returner muffs (does not catch) a punt, the ball rolls into the end zone, where they recover the ball. This is a touchback, not a safety. The play with Jones is not that much different, just more complicated.TouchbacksFrom the NFL Rulebook, Rule 11 Cheap Dan Feeney Jersey , Section 6, Articles 1-2:Section 6 complements 5, as it defines what is a touchback, rather than what is not a safety.Jones being tackled in his own endzone with a ball whose impetus originated with the Chargers is completely in-line with Article 2(a).Penalties on PuntsYou all will recall that a play is dead as soon as a player’s helmet comes off. Even if the refs miss the whistle. From the NFL Rulebook, Rule 7, Section 2, Article 1:NFL Rulebook Rule 12, Section 2, Articles 6-7 have a lot of situations covering defenseless players and unnecessary roughness. While striking a player without a helmet is not mentioned, striking someone in the head without a helmet has to be worse than a helmet to helmet hit (which is covered) as a personal foul. From the NFL Rulebook, Rule 9 Trevor Williams Jersey , Section 5, Article 1: The above rules state that a foul on a scrimmage kick (read: punt), when the dead-ball spot results in a touchback, can be assessed at the 20-yard line or force a re-kick after the penalty assessment.ConclusionMuch the to the chagrin of Chargers’ fans, the refs got this call right. There was no fumble, but rather a muffed punt recovered by the receiving team in its’ own endzone. The impetus for the ball entering the endzone came from the kicking team, so the receiving team does not commit a safety. The play would have ended on the tackle of Jones, but instead ended on the dead ball call for a player losing their helmet. The Bills maintained possession of the ball, with the dead ball spot occurring in their own endzone: a touchback.Striking a defenseless player warrants a 15-yard penalty from the spot of the foul. The Bills opted to have the penalty assessed at the touchback spot: the 20-yard line.Bills ball at their 35 yard line.Update:It appears that Taiwan Jones escaped without a concussion, though a rather nasty gash.It also appears that Nwosu reached out to Jones: With the preseason winding down, Los Angeles Chargers rookie safety Derwin James is getting closer and closer to earning a starting job.According to Greg Beacham of the Associated Press Cheap Derwin James Jersey , Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said Monday that James could indeed get the starting nod next to Jahleel Addae for L.A.’s opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.“You can see his confidence growing in the system,” Bradley said. “If he makes a mistake, now he knows. He’ll come over and go, ‘That was on me.’ I couldn’t say that a couple of weeks ago.”Though it’s regularly the case that Top 20 picks in the NFL Draft become instantaneous starters for their newest professional football teams, it’s never a given.Quarterbacks routinely don’t start right away. Players such as Vernon Gholston and Dion Jordan never started as rookies (or hardly at all) for the teams that drafted them in the Top 10.The Chargers have given James every chance to quickly up to speed. He’s played more snaps than any other defender on the team’s roster through three preseason games. James started the Chargers’ third preseason game against New Orleans after Desmond King and Jaylen Watkins started the first two weeks. For James to be nearing the starting lineup as a rookie for a team that ranked third in total defense last season is a strong indication of his growth so far.“I feel like the more reps I get, the more knowledge will come,” James said. “Gus does a great job of saying, ‘When you’re uncomfortable, that’s when you get the most growth.’ Right now I’m kind of uncomfortable, and I feel like I’m getting better each day.” www.nflshopoutlet.com/baltimore-ravens
The Panthers haven’t had much good news lately Cheap Josh LeRibeus Jersey , but they got some before Monday’s game.Defensive tackle Kawann Short, who the team upgraded from doubtful to questionable earlier in the day, will play. He injured his calf in Thursday’s practice and missed Friday and Saturday.Carolina will have Chandler Catanzaro kicking a second consecutive week. The Panthers already had ruled out Graham Gano with a knee injury. The Panthers’ other inactives are cornerback Lorenzo Doss, receiver Mose Frazier, defensive end Marquis Haynes, running back Travaris Cadet, linebacker Andre Smith and defensive end Efe Obada. The Saints already had ruled out left tackle Terron Armstead, who has missed the past four games. Armstead’s chest injury has kept Jermon Bushrod in the starting lineup.New Orleans’ other inactives are receiver Austin Carr, receiver Simmie Cobbs, defensive end Trey Hendrickson, defensive lineman Mitch Loewen, offensive tackle Derek Newton and linebacker Manti Te鈥檕.2018 New Orleans Saints Training Camp Preview: Tight End The New Orleans Saints officially begin training camp on July 26th. By all accounts, the team has had a successful offseason, upgrading many perceived positions of need with draft picks and free agent signings. One area that most expected the Saints to address highly in the draft was passed on by the team, however. New Orleans tight ends were responsible for only around 11% of the team's receptions and yardage output in 2017 Cheap Vonn Bell Jersey , combining for 476 yards on 45 receptions and 4 touchdowns. In today's training camp preview, we take a look at perhaps the most glaring weakness on an otherwise talented roster over the last two seasons. TIGHT END Key Losses: Coby Fleener (released)Key Additions: Benjamin Watson (free agent, Ravens)Photo by Sean Gardner/Getty ImagesThe Saints parted ways with Fleener this offseason, a high priced free agent acquisition in 2016 from the Indianapolis Colts. Fleener, released in part due to ongoing concussion issues, had 72 receptions for 926 yards and five touchdowns in 26 games as a Saint. His first season in New Orleans was average (50-631, 3), but he was unable to provide a consistent threat in the middle or down the field as the Saints had hoped when signing him. New Orleans did bring back an old friend, re-signing Ben Watson away from the Baltimore Ravens. Watson, a 37-yr old veteran entering his 15th season, led the Ravens in receptions (61) and receiving touchdowns (4) a year ago while finishing second on the team in receiving yards. Watson had previously played for New Orleans from 2013-15, and his 74 receptions for the Saints in 2015 ranked second on the team, while his 824 yards receiving that year ranked third. It was the highest receiving output by a Saints tight end other than Jimmy Graham since Henry Childs in 1979, and the 6th best production in team history at the position. Watson is more than a receiving threat and trusted target of quarterback Drew Brees. He is also one of the league's better blockers at tight end, and an outstanding locker room leader. Photo by Greg Shamus /Getty ImagesJosh Hill has not progressed as a receiver like the team had hoped when they traded Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. Over the last four years Cheap Austin Carr Jersey , Hill has had 14, 16, 15, and 16 receptions for an average of 142 yards per year. He does show some downfield potential as a receiver, and a penchant for getting open around the goal line, but has never been able to do it consistently. Hill is a very good blocker, often starting games over Fleener due to Fleener's liability as a blocker. Hill's value to the Saints offense lies far more with his blocking ability than that as a receiver, but he could strengthen his roster position by becoming a more reliable target in the passing game. Steve Roberts-USA TODAY SportsOne roster spot that could be in jeopardy is that of Michael Hoomanawanui. Used almost exclusively as an extra blocker, the 30-yr. old Hoomanawanui has caught 17 passes for 128 yards and 4 touchdowns for the Saints since being acquired in a 2015 trade with the New England Patriots. He offers little downfield range as a receiver, but is certainly a valuable asset in the running game, particularly short yardage. Garrett Griffin enters his third training camp with New Orleans, after spending most of the last two years on the practice squad. He has one career catch, and looks to be a longshot for a roster spot. Deon Yelder attracted alot of attention at the team's OTA's and mini-camp practices last month, and could push Hoomanawanui and Hill for roster spots. An undrafted rookie from Western Kentucky, he didn't have a reception until his senior season Cheap Sheldon Rankins Jersey , when he caught the attention of scouts with 52 catches for 688 yards and 7 touchdowns. Yelder shows good ability as a blocker, has good straight line speed, and is a load to bring down in the open field. He doesn't have great change of direction fluidity, and is very inexperienced as a route runner. Yelder looks like a potentially exciting player to watch at camp, but a developmental prospect for sure, who could benefit greatly from the leadership and tutelage of a veteran like Watson. Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY SportsThe Saints offense no longer relies on heavy production from the tight end, as was the case when Graham starred for the team. New Orleans boasts the league's best tandem of running backs in Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram, one of the NFL's best receivers in Michael Thomas, a powerful offensive line, and a Hall of Fame quarterback still playing near the top of his game with Drew Brees. Despite all that, the Saints offense ranked just 19th in 3rd down efficiency in 2017, unacceptable and unheard of for a Sean Payton offense. Benjamin Watson's reunion with New Orleans could be an underrated offseason move. The team is hoping that Watson can continue to be a two way threat, giving even more versatility to it's base and short yardage personnel. The additions Cameron Meredith and rookie Tre'quan Smith at wide receiver should also help change the Saints' third down struggles, but the team must get better production from it's tight ends in 2018. The NBC camera on Minnesota's pregame huddle in Chicago captured Kirk Cousins delivering the customary pep talk to his teammates http://www.saintscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-larry-warford-jersey , a full-throated reminder by the quarterback that the Vikings reached the NFC championship game last season, not the Bears."They're not the reason this game moved to prime time," Cousins shouted. "We are."Soon after the opening kickoff, though, the Vikings (5-4-1) wilted in the spotlight of the NFL's showcase Sunday night game. The offense didn't score until 7 seconds were left in the third quarter, and the defense gave up a season-high 148 rushing yards, leading to a 25-20 loss that wasn't as close as the score. The Vikings fell 1陆 games behind the Bears (7-3) in the NFC North, meaning they'll have to win once more than the surprise division leader over the next five games to make the rematch on Dec. 30 count toward the race.Chicago plays the Los Angeles Rams (9-1) on Dec. 2, but that's at home. Every other opponent has a losing record. Minnesota has back-to-back road games against the New England Patriots (7-3) and Seattle Seahawks (5-5) looming."The schedule's the schedule. I'm not worried about that," coach Mike Zimmer said. What most troubled Zimmer were the three turnovers, a failure to reach the end zone on the first three trips inside the 20-yard line, and a total of 22 rushing yards on 14 attempts . His message to the offense in meetings throughout the week was that those three areas would determine the outcome."Either they're not listening or they're not paying attention or they don't really care Cheap Ryan Ramczyk Jersey ," Zimmer said. "So we'll have to find out which one of the three it is."The defense also had a 15-yard penalty on two of Chicago's three drives for field goals.Cousins said the defeat "certainly humbles you," a potential positive to take in preparation for the next game against the rival Green Bay Packers (4-5-1). The Vikings have already had several of those sobering defeats this year, from the lopsided loss at home against the lowly Buffalo Bills to the 556 total yards allowed to the Rams to the gaffes that precipitated their fall against the New Orleans Saints.Whether there's some natural regression in the works after their 13-3 regular-season record in 2017, a few flaws they haven't yet fixed or a little bit of bad luck, the Vikings have been a hair off and a step behind from the start this year despite adding Cousins to one of the league's deepest rosters. In facing the Rams, Saints and Bears in nationally televised night games, the top three teams in the NFC, the Vikings have performed like a wild-card team at best."We're a good team. We know that. It's just about going out there and doing it. Quit talking about it," linebacker Eric Kendricks said. "Just getting back to work, putting our hard hats on and no excuses. We've got to point the finger at ourselves, so we've just got to get the job done, period."The Vikings have 16 turnovers http://www.saintscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-benjamin-watson-jersey , seventh most in the NFL after producing at least one in all but one game. That's already two more than last season, when they had the third fewest in the league."That's what we talk about every single day since OTAs, talk about protecting the football," wide receiver Adam Thielen said. "The percentage of you winning a football game when you lose a turnover battle is pretty low. We know that. We have to go back to work and figure it out."The Vikings finished in the top seven in the NFL in fewest turnovers in each of Zimmer's first four years."It's been frustrating at times," Zimmer said, noting the unlikelihood of some of the giveaways like Thielen's fumble against the Saints that turned that game around: He added: "I guess stuff happens sometimes."Saints defense would have a different look in 2015 NFL re-draft With the benefit of hindsight, re-drafting an NFL draft from years’ past is typically fun. Then you’d have scenarios like the 2017 NFL Draft, where if teams had a do-over, there is absolutely a zero percent change the Saints are able to end up with any of the players they actually drafted. That’s the rub - if you re-draft a successful draft, you’re disappointed with the new results, but if you re-draft a poor draft class, you can think about what could-have-been.So when ESPN re-drafted the 2015 NFL Draft (Insider Required) Ken Crawley Jersey , it’s definitely a case of daydreaming about what the Saints defense could have looked like if the Saints skipped out on a player like Stephone Anthony all together. The Saints had two picks in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft (the second pick coming at 31st overall from the Seattle Seahawks as part of the Jimmy Graham trade. With their first 1st Round pick, the Saints selected Andrus Peat out of Stanford 13th overall. Instead, in the re-draft, they added a piece to the secondary:Andrus Peat, in case you were wondering, did not make the entire first round of the ESPN re-draft. He would likely show up somewhere in the next two rounds if the mock re-draft were to continue. Stephone Anthony, who the Saints selected 31st overall, on the other hand, would be hard pressed to see his name called in the first four rounds. Instead, the Saints added a different linebacker in the re-drafth, what could have been.So what do you think of the Saints first round draft class in the re-draft? Would you have preferred the Saints still find their way to Andrus Peat 31st overall? Tell us in the comments. Send me presents. nflshopoutlet.com
In December http://www.thevikingsfootballauthentic.com/mike-remmers-jersey-authentic , we passed along the news that the Minnesota Vikings had worked out Canadian Football League quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell. Now, as the calendar is nearly ready to turn to February, the Vikings are apparently among the favorites to sign the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Player, but they’ve got some competition.According to CFL News, the Vikings are one of three teams that are reportedly in the running for Mitchell’s services. The other two are the Denver Broncos and the Jacksonville Jaguars.During his time as the quarterback of the Calgary Stampeders Authentic Dalvin Cook Jersey , Mitchell led his team to two Grey Cup titles (2014 and 2018) and was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player twice (2016 and 2018). He split his college career between Southern Methodist and Eastern Washington, and went directly to the CFL after going undrafted in 2012.The news report says that Mitchell is apparently assessing where he “has a shot.” If that’s the case, of the three teams on the list of reported favorites, the Vikings would appear to be a long shot. Whether anyone likes it or not, the Vikings are basically committed to Kirk Cousins for the next two seasons as their starter. On the other hand Womens Tom Compton Jersey , Case Keenum is in the last year of his contract in Denver and wasn’t terribly impressive in his first season, while it appears that the Blake Bortles Experience is over with in Jacksonville, meaning that job would be up for grabs. If Mitchell would be satisfied with being a backup, then he might be able to find a fit in Minnesota. On Tuesday Womens Tom Compton Jersey , the Minnesota Vikings did a bit of reshuffling on their practice squad, bringing back a familiar face. Well, fairly familiar anyway.According to Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Vikings have signed cornerback Jalen Myrick and offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty to their practice squad. In order to make room for them, they waived defensive tackle Curtis Cothran and waived defensive end Jonathan Wynn with an injury designation.Myrick, the former Golden Gopher, was on the Vikings’ practice squad earlier this season, but was released just a week ago. He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and spent his rookie season with the Jaguars.Bisnowaty played his college ball at the University of Pittsburgh Womens Trae Waynes Jersey , where he was teammates with current Vikings’ right tackle Brian O’Neill. Bisnowaty was taken in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft (#200 overall) by the New York Giants, and started the Giants’ regular season finale at right tackle after spending that year on the practice squad. He was cut this preseason, and spent time with both the Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers this past offseason.Cothran was an undrafted free agent from Penn State who spent Training Camp with the Vikings and was signed to the practice squad following final cuts. Wynn was also part of the team’s final cutdown, and was signed by the team back on 1 October.Because Wynn was waived with an injury designation, if he goes unclaimed he will go onto the Vikings’ injured reserve list. With these moves, the Vikings’ 10-man practice squad now looks like this:WR Jeff BadetWR Chad BeebeOT Adam BisnowatyLB Reshard CliettOL Cornelius EdisonOL Colby GossettTE Cole HikutiniCB Craig JamesCB Jalen MyrickOT Storm Norton In 2017, the Vikings had the NFL’s 7th ranked rushing attack. Most of this success came without the services of Dalvin Cook, following his ACL tear in Week 4. Coming into 2018, all pundits Youth Adam Thielen Jersey , writers, fantasy owners, and probably the Vikings themselves thought this was something that would be good again, or even improve upon Dalvin’s return. However, with the exception of this previous week’s performance vs. Arizona, that has been far from the case.Entering Week 7, the Vikings are averaging a horrendous 87.3 rushing yards/game, 28th in the NFL. When they acquired Kirk Cousins, seemingly pairing him with a strong running game was his missing piece. Not having a strong running game to go to as a tone setter in the 1st quarter has been an enormous issue. So what are the values of Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray? It’s very feasible that Cook’s hamstring injury could nag for the duration of the 2018 campaign http://www.thevikingsfootballauthentic.com/matt-wile-jersey-authentic , which makes it even more feasible that him and Murray have a more even split of touches than what was originally anticipated. It’s also possible Cook makes his living catching passes, at least as far as fantasy output goes, not that it solves the issues of having an incompetent rushing attack thus far. However, that can’t be all put in Cook. Statistically, he’s been one of the league’s best at making people miss. While it’s a good showing of his strong set of skills, it’s also an indicator of just how poor the offensive line has been, which has also struggled to consistently protect Kirk Cousins. One thing that also needs to be taken into consideration is the fact that C.J. Ham, Roc Thomas, and Mike Boone are all being kept on the roster. All three have had their share of touches Youth Stefon Diggs Jersey , and Ham was lined up in the backfield on Cousins’ touchdown run against Arizona. It’s entirely possible that this was done by Mike Zimmer already having an idea that Cook may struggle with his health this season. For someone taken so high in fantasy drafts prior to the season, many owners of Cook (myself included) can’t be to happy about this.Simply put, no Vikings running back is a weekly top choice to start on your team. There are too many questions about how far the offensive line has regressed from a season ago, and too many touches going around to all the backs on the roster. The Vikings also have become so pass-heavy that they will likely have more games where they don’t run the ball 20 times. Getting to that threshold each week could result in more wins, but not translate to points for fantasy teams. Thus, be mindful about starting Cook or Murray each week, as long as the current trend doesn’t go in an upward direction.
San Diego right-hander Tyson Ross struggled through a forgettable stint as a member of the Texas Rangers last season but is enjoying a rejuvenation this year with the Padres.
Ross said he won’t bring any bad feelings with him to the mound when the two teams square off in the middle contest of the three-game Braden Smith Jersey , interleague set on Tuesday at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.
Texas took the opening game of the series 7-4 on Monday as Shin-Soo Choo had three hits and drove in one of the Rangers’ five runs in the pivotal sixth inning. The victory was Texas’ eighth in its past nine games.
Ross (5-5, 3.34 ERA) will try to help San Diego even the set while the Rangers will counter with right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-1, 4.58).
Ross had surgery prior to the 2017 campaign to address thoracic outlet syndrome and made only 12 appearances for Texas before he was released in mid-September after posting a 7.71 ERA.
“I’d probably have struggled no matter where I was last year, just being five, six months out of surgery and picking up a baseball again,” Ross told MLB.com. “It was a lot of ups and downs in that year with Texas. But I think it was growing pains, and I was going to go through it no matter where I was, really.”
Ross will make his 16th start of the season. The Padres have won six of his past eight starts and are 10-5 overall when he takes the mound.
Ross was the losing pitcher on June 21 at San Francisco in his most recent outing despite tossing seven innings in which he allowed just one run. He received zero run support for the second consecutive outing and has worked five or more innings in 14 of his 15 starts, including nine quality outings.
Prior to Monday’s win, Texas manager Jeff Banister was campaigning for a spot for Choo in this year’s All-Star Game. Choo has never played in the midseason classic in his 14-year major league career.
Choo reached base for the 38th straight game, which is a career-high, with the first of his three hits on Monday.
“With how things have gone for us on a day-to-day basis, and what he’s done Kemoko Turay Jersey , I believe that Choo should be recognized as a guy that should have an opportunity to be an All-Star,” Banister opined. “Choo’s an on-base guy first, and when he’s doing that, he’s seeing pitches. He’s focused more on driving the ball that he gets to hit. He’s really good at it, and it keeps him from chasing balls out of the zone.”
Bibens-Dirkx will take the bump for his fourth start of the season and will be working on extended five days’ rest after earning his first win of the year in the Rangers’ 3-2 victory on Wednesday at Kansas City. He was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock prior to that start for his second stint with Texas in 2018.
Bibens-Dirkx is the second Texas starter to win without a strikeout since the start of 2012 (also Colby Lewis, April 29, 2016, vs. Los Angeles), and is the first to do it on the road since Tommy Hunter on Aug. 22, 2010, at Baltimore.
Bibens-Dirkx’ unique outing last Wednesday is also the only quality start without a strikeout in MLB this season. He has never faced the Padres.
TORONTO — The New York Yankees evened their series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon, but the availability of closer Aroldis Chapman for the rubber match Sunday was unknown.
Chapman struck out the first batter of the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday in the Yankees’ 8-5 victory at the Rogers Centre, but then left the mound with a recurrence of left knee tendinitis that he has dealt with for the past two months.
“I don’t think today was anything too extreme from what he’s been dealing with much of the year,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “It was more me getting him out of there because of the score.”
He is considered day-to-day.
Chapman entered the game in the ninth with a four-run lead Tyquan Lewis Jersey , a non-save situation.
“With a four-run lead, I didn’t want to take any chances with it,” Boone said. “He said he was fine to continue.”
Chasen Shreve replaced the left-hander and finished the game, allowing a home run to Aledmys Diaz.
The teams will go for the series win Sunday afternoon with the Yankees (57-29) sending out right-hander Domingo German (2-4, 5.37 ERA) and the Blue Jays (41-47) will start left-hander Ryan Borucki (0-1, 2.77).
The Yankees also lost center fielder Aaron Hicks to a cramp and hamstring tightness in his left leg in the fifth inning. Toronto reliever Rhiner Cruz left the game with a groin injury in the top of the ninth.
Hicks will be likely given Sunday off. No MRI has been done at this stage, so Boone hoped the day off would be enough.
“He feels like he’s OK,” Boone said.
Clint Frazier, who was called up from Triple-A, took over in left field when Hicks was removed with Brett Gardner moving from left to center.
In a twist to the game, the Yankees scored six runs and had four hits and six walks in 2 2/3 innings against Toronto left-hander J.A. Happ, a pitcher they could be interested in obtaining before the July 31 deadline for trades without waivers.
It was the second poor start in a row for Happ, who gave up seven runs in 5 2/3 innings to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Happ said the rumors of a trade, possibly to the Yankees Nyheim Hines Jersey , did not influence his start.
“It really doesn’t change. I was ready to pitch. I was excited to pitch, I felt good,” Happ said. “I don’t know. I think you try to flush this one as best you can and it’s going to be a tough couple of days in between, but hopefully you bounce back.
“I don’t think these last two are really indicative of how I’ve pitched the last several years, so you try to flip the script as best as you can and just move forward.
“I’m just focused on playing for the Blue Jays right now. There’s rumors out there. You never know what’s speculation, what’s true, and what has any realistic chance. I’m just trying to play and pitch. I’m happy right here and we’ll see what happens.”
German will make his 17th appearance and 11th start of the year for the Yankees. He has faced Toronto twice in his career, both in relief, going 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA.
In German’s only outing against the Blue Jays this season, he allowed two runs, two hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Borucki will make his third career outing (all starts) when he pitches against the Yankees for the first time. He allowed two runs, six hits and no walks and had eight strikeouts Monday but did not factor in the decision against the Detroit Tigers.
The Yankees are 8-4 against the Blue Jays this season and 5-3 at the Rogers Centre. They last had five wins in Toronto in 2009 when they were 6-3.
The Blue Jays are 4-4 on a homestand that ends Sunday.
Wade LeBlanc is a journeyman. His 10-year career has featured stops with seven different organizations and even one in Japan Ryan Grant Jersey , where he thought he was finished.
In the left-hander’s second stint with Seattle, it appears he’s finally found a home.
LeBlanc (4-0) allowed one run over seven innings after inking a contract extension with the Mariners earlier in the day, and Seattle beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 on Tuesday night for its eighth straight victory.
The Angels’ Shohei Ohtani was activated from the 10-day disabled list and went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in his return. He had been sidelined since June 8 with a Grade 2 ulnar collateral ligament sprain.
“I think it was huge that I got all those at-bats in the simulated games,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. ”It’s a different game up here in the big leagues. Maybe still not quite there yet, but just keep on working hard, come back tomorrow.”
The Mariners announced they signed LeBlanc (4-0) to the extension before his start and the soft-tossing left-hander showed them they made a good decision. LeBlanc allowed three hits, struck out four and retired his final 11 batters.
”It’s huge,” LeBlanc said. ”It’s life-changing money, obviously, but for me, I’ve never been the kind of guy to know where my family and I are going to be the next year this early.”
LeBlanc’s contract reportedly extends him through the 2019 season, with a base salary of $2.75 million and incentives that could raise that to $4.75 next season, and contains club options valued at $5 million with a $450,000 buyout the three following seasons.
It rewards LeBlanc after he’s provided an unexpected source of stability to the Mariners’ rotation. Seattle is 9-3 in games he’s started and he boasts a 2.90 ERA since moving to the rotation on May 3.
”It’s good to feel wanted Marshall Faulk Jersey ,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. ”I know Wade’s been everywhere in his career, but we’re definitely seeing the best of Wade LeBlanc right now. I’m looking forward to having him in the future. He’s done an unbelievable job for us.
”The best part about these deals with a guy like that that’s bounced around, is that he’s earned it. And that’s really what makes you feel good and allows you to sleep at night.”
LeBlanc was signed by the Mariners in spring training after he requested his release from the Yankees, who signed him to a minor league contract.
Alex Colome picked LeBlanc up by stranding Kole Calhoun after his one-out double in the eighth and Edwin Diaz earned his American League-leading 33rd save with a clean ninth inning.
Kyle Seager was 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded double in the first. Nelson Cruz provided insurance with a solo homer in the eighth.
Andrew Heaney (4-6) tied a career high with 10 strikeouts, but was tagged with three runs in the first inning to fall behind and was handed the loss.
“Andrew was terrific tonight,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ”The walks were probably the one negative for him in the first inning.
”He pitched a great game, gave us a chance to win. We just couldn’t get any kind of pressure offensively.”
Andrelton Simmons’ homer in the fourth was all the Angels could muster offensively.
300 CLUB
Mariners second baseman Dee Gordon stole third base in the eighth inning to put him at 300 career stolen bases.
TRAINER’S ROOM
ANGELS: Angels outfielder Chris Young exited in the first inning with a left hamstring strain, the club announced. Young stumbled to the ground while fielding Seager’s double to right field and fell to the ground in noticeable pain, staying there until leaving the game with trainers.
MARINERS: Servais said Erasmo Ramirez’s bullpen on Sunday went well and the right-hander will move on with his throwing program.
UP NEXT
ANGELS: RHP Garrett Richards (4-4) will be activated from the 10-day disabled list and start against the Mariners on Wednesday. He’s been out since June 14 with a left hamstring sprain.
MARINERS: RHP Mike Leake (8-4) will make his 18th start of the season and third against the Angels on Wednesday. The 30-year-old has lasted seven-plus innings seven times this season and boasted a 2.57 ERA in June.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady missed practice with a right hand injury a day after being limited by the same issue as New England prepared for its AFC championship game matchup with Jacksonville.
Brady was present and wore a glove on the injured hand during the stretching portion of practice open to reporters. But he was listed as a non-participant on the injury report. He usually only wears a glove on his non-throwing hand.
His scheduled news conference was also postponed until Friday.
Brady appeared on the Patriots’ weekly injury report several times during the latter half of the regular season with both an Achilles tendon and left shoulder injury. But the 40-year-old has never missed a playoff start during his 18-year career. He hasn’t missed any start because of an injury since he sat out the final 15 games of the 2008 season with a knee injury.
GYMNASTICS
LANSING, Mich. (AP) – U.S. Olympian McKayla Maroney said being sexually assaulted by a Michigan sports doctor who molested her and other gymnasts scarred her mind in ways that may never heal.
Dr. Larry Nassar won’t be sentenced until next week to accommodate the many victims who want to speak. Since Tuesday, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina has listened to more than 60 who were molested after seeking his help for injuries, including a statement from Maroney that was read by a prosecutor.
”Dr. Nassar was not a doctor,” said the 2012 Olympic gold and silver medalist. ”He left scars on my psyche that may never go away.”
USA Gymnastics in 2016 reached a financial settlement with Maroney that barred her from making disparaging remarks. But the organization this week said it would not seek any money for her ”brave statements.”
As the hearing was happening, USA Gymnastics announced that it was ending its long relationship with the Karolyi Ranch Eric Ebron Jersey , the Huntsville, Texas, home of former national team coordinator Martha Karolyi and her husband, Bela. The announcement came three days after Olympic champion Simone Biles expressed dismay at having to attend camps there, where she says Nassar sexually abused her.
BASEBALL
NEW YORK (AP) – The players’ association rejected Major League Baseball’s proposal to institute 20-second pitch clocks and limits on mound visits, a move that dares management to unilaterally impose the changes designed to speed pace of games.
Union head Tony Clark and deputy general counsel Matt Nussbaum informed MLB of the decision during a telephone call to deputy commissioner Dan Halem, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.
Management has the right to implement the rules changes it proposed last year. Under baseball’s labor contract, management can change on-field rules on its own with one season of advance notice.
MLB does not intend to make any decision before its next owners’ meetings, scheduled for Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 in Beverly Hills, California. Spring training games start Feb. 23 and the season opens March 29.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield says one of his top priorities as he prepares for the NFL draft is to allay concerns about his character.
”People will have their guesses and their opinions on my character, but anyone that’s actually sat down and talked to me knows that I don’t have any character issues, any off-the-field issues,” Mayfield said during a conference call after being selected the 2017 Manning Award winner.
Mayfield, who passed for 4 Matt Slauson Jersey ,627 yards and 43 touchdowns, is the first Sooner and first former walk-on to win the Manning Award, which is given to the nation’s top college quarterback. It is the only award to consider postseason performances in voting by a national media panel as well as Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.
Mayfield also won the Heisman Trophy this season. And after racking up prestigious accolades for his performances during live snaps, Mayfield said he’s eager to meet with NFL coaches and front-office personnel and explain why some of his antics after the whistle and his behavior off the field won’t be an issue going forward.
AUTO RACING
The original ”GoDaddy Girl” is back with sponsorship intact to push forward with her ”Danica Double.”
Danica Patrick has secured the money needed to race in both the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500. Now she just needs to find the rides to get her back on racing’s two biggest stages. GoDaddy reunited with Patrick on Thursday for the final two races of her career, even though she still has to close deals with teams to make it happen.
She’s not worried about pulling it off, either.
”Power of positive thinking,” she told The Associated Press from Scottsdale, Arizona.
Patrick announced in November she would end her driving career at Daytona and Indy, but still doesn’t have rides. Yet Patrick always figures a way to get what she wants. When talks ended with Chip Ganassi Racing about seats for both races, Patrick said, she called former GoDaddy founder Bob Parsons late last month and asked about a reunion.
SOCCER
The Washington Spirit selected midfielder Andi Sullivan out of Stanford with the first pick in the National Women’s Soccer League draft. Draft day also featured a high-profile three-team trade involving U.S. national team star Carli Lloyd.
A person familiar with the deal said Sky Blue FC acquired Lloyd in a trade that sent Christen Press to the Houston Dash and Australian Sam Kerr to the Chicago Red Stars. The person s
Derrick Henry isn’t a big or brash talker. That’s what made the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner calling his performance ”kind of soft” in Tennessee’s regular-season finale stand out.
The massive running back sure made up for that with an NFL postseason debut for the record books.
Getting Henry to acknowledge any change in his own confidence or being pleased after a big game is as tough as tackling him in the open field.
”I’m just trying to play better every week Malik Hooker Jersey ,” Henry said . ”I’m going to get another chance to play – it’s a great team in a good environment – so just making sure I’m doing all the right things this week.”
Henry rebounded from a game in which he ran for 51 yards by setting a franchise playoff record with 191 yards from scrimmage, helping the Titans rally for a 22-21 victory over Kansas City in the wild-card round. He topped the previous mark set by Billy Cannon in January 1961 with the best performance by a running back in the playoffs in at least a decade.
Now it’s up to Bill Belichick and the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots (13-3) to slow down Henry on Saturday night in their AFC divisional game. Belichick says everyone on defense has to do his job.
”Henry has got a ton of skill, and he’s got power, good vision,” Belichick said. ”He can certainly run inside and break tackles, he’s a tough runner, he can get tough runs. But, he’s very athletic in the open field. He’s fast, he can cut back, he can get to space. He’s broken off a lot of long runs, running plays, screens.”
Against Jacksonville on Dec. 31, Henry made up for a rough day running by taking a screen 66 yards for a touchdown . But his first three carries went backward, including a 12-yard loss that came dangerously close to a safety.
”He saw some of the things that he missed by trying to bounce some things,” Titans coach Mike Mularkey said. ”He’s had a lot of success bouncing some runs, but at some point you’ve got to hit some of these holes that are there, and they’re not big all the time. I think he saw that, and obviously he’s a quick, fast learner.”
The second-year running back out of Alabama bounced back with a career-high 156 yards, just shy of Eddie George’s franchise-record 162 in a postseason game.
Henry also had 85 yards in the fourth quarter, including a 35-yard touchdown , for the NFL’s third-best rushing performance in the fourth quarter of a playoff game since the 1991 season. Only LeGarrette Blount (114 yards for the Patriots vs. the Colts on Jan. 11 Quincy Wilson Jersey , 2014) and Derek Loville (97 yards for the Broncos against the Jaguars on Dec. 27, 1997) have been better in that span.
Finishing is what the 6-foot-3, 247-pound Henry does best. Only the Chiefs’ Kareem Hunt had more yards rushing (474) in the NFL in the fourth quarter this season than Henry (390), who averaged a league-best 6.09 yards per carry over the final 15 minutes.
Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia says Henry is powerful with a dangerous stiff-arm.
”If it’s a one-on-one tackling situation, it’s extremely difficult to get him down in that instance,” Patricia said.
Henry teamed with quarterback Marcus Mariota to pile up a franchise-record 202 yards rushing for a postseason game. The Patriots ranked 31st, allowing 4.7 yards per rushing play.
DeMarco Murray already has been declared out for a third straight game for Tennessee, leaving the backfield to Henry.
”It’s my job trying to help this team win games,” Henry said. ”It’s always fun when you’re playing football.”

MILWAUKEE — Ryan Braun will be back in the starting lineup Sunday when the Milwaukee Brewers wrap up their four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park.
Braun left the team ahead of their scheduled game in Pittsburgh Wednesday morning to get an injection on his right thumb — a process he undergoes every few months after a nerve issue in the thumb robbed him of his power in 2014.
Braun returned to the team Thursday ahead of the series opener against St. Louis but despite being ready and available, according to manager Craig Counsell, Braun has yet to appear in a game since coming back.
“Ryan is doing fine, he’s doing great,” Counsell said Saturday before the Brewers’ 3-2 loss to the Cardinals. “I just think that if we can give him more time, great, that works out for both of us in that perspective. He’ll play (Sunday).”
With Braun sidelined, Eric Thames has seen most of the action in left field, a move that allows Counsell to keep hot-hitting Jesus Aguilar at first base.
Putting Thames in left also allowed the Brewers the flexibility to option slumping outfielder Domingo Santana to Triple-A Colorado Springs Saturday morning.
The 25-year-old Santana hit 30 home runs in a breakout 2017 campaign but with his playing time limited after Milwaukee added Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich during the offseason, Santana hasn’t made the most of his limited opportunities. He was batting .249 with three home runs, 17 RBIs and a .667 slugging percentage while going more than two series without a start.
“We need to get Domingo going,” Counsell said. “At some point, we’re going to need Domingo. We’d both prefer he’d be rolling and clicking when that time comes. It’s tough to do when you’re not playing that much.
“Eric and ‘Aggie’ are playing well. We’re trying to find ways to get them both in the lineup. That’s a factor in this.”
To replace Santana on the active roster, Milwaukee recalled infielder Brad Miller from Colorado Springs. That move could help the Brewers address another troubling situation: The season-long offensive struggles of shortstop Orlando Arcia.
Arcia is batting .201 with a .234 on-base percentage this season but has remained in Counsell’s starting lineup on a regular basis because of his stellar ability on defense and because the Brewers lacked other viable options.
Eric Sogard has struggled at the plate this season Tarell Basham Jersey , too, batting .146 with a .255 OBP. Counsell prefers to keep Jonathan Villar at second base, where he moved after Arcia was promoted two years ago and Tyler Saladino, who performed well enough after joining the team in May for the Brewers to send Arcia to Triple-A is out indefinitely with a serious ankle sprain.
“Brad has played all over the field,” Counsell said. “He played a lot of shortstop for a while, then he played a lot of second base, then a lot of first base. So, he has moved around in different years, but it’s been a while since he played shortstop.”
One thing that has been constant for Milwaukee this season is right-hander Jhoulys Chacin.
As has been the case for most of his career, Chacin has been especially effective at home this season where he’s posted a 2.31 ERA in six starts at Miller Park.
Overall, he’s made a team-leading 16 starts this season and is 6-2 with a 3.18 ERA. He’s held opponents to a .231 average and a 1.24 WHIP while striking out 66 in 87 2/3 innings.
“He’s pitching,” Counsell said. “He’s got some cunning and some craftiness out there, as well as good stuff.”
The Cardinals will be trying to get a split of the series after Yadier Molina hit two homers Saturday. The Cardinals dropped the first two games by committing four errors Thursday and allowing a game-ending homer to Aguilar Friday.
Molina has five homers in his last six games and guided Miles Mikolas through 6 2/3 strong innings.
“What he’s doing behind the plate is willpower,” St. Louis Mike Matheny said. “Being able to handle pain and discomfort. He’s smarter at the plate. He has such a great idea, and he’s dangerous, obviously. It’s hard to say, if he kept playing, where he’d be right now in the home run column and a number of others.”
Right-hander Luke Weaver gets the nod for the Cardinals as they try to build momentum after snapping a three-game losing streak.
Weaver will be looking for his first victory since May 11 when he threw five shutout innings in a 9-5 victory at San Diego. In seven starts since that outing, Weaver is 0-4 with a 4.46 ERA and has allowed four runs in each of his last three starts while recording only one out past the fifth inning.
He’s 2-2 with a 4.41 ERA in six career starts against the Brewers with a 2-2 mark and 3.68 ERA in four starts at Miller Park, where he lasted four innings and took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits in an 8-3 loss on May 28.
The Tennessee Titans have interviewed three candidates in their search for new coach and none have had any NFL head coaching experience. Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur was the third to interview for the job.
The Titans announced Friday they had concluded LaFleur’s interview.
LaFleur http://www.kansascitychiefsteamonline.com/patrick-mahomes-ii-jersey , 38, is coming off his first season as offensive coordinator, though Rams coach Sean McVay called the plays. LaFleur was quarterbacks coach with Atlanta in 2015 and 2016, the year Matt Ryan was named NFL MVP and offensive player of the year. He also coached quarterbacks at Notre Dame in 2014 working with Everett Golson.
In four seasons with the Washington Redskins, LaFleur was quarterbacks coach and worked with Robert Griffin III. Griffin became the first Redskins rookie quarterback named to the Pro Bowl. LaFleur started in the NFL as an offensive assistant with the Houston
He started coaching at his alma mater Saginaw Valley State where he played quarterback. He also coached at Central Michigan and Northern Michigan.
The Titans interviewed a pair of defensive coordinators Thursday in Houston’s Mike Vrabel and Carolina’s Steve Wilks to start their search to replace Mike Mularkey, fired Monday after going 21-22 with the franchise’s first playoff win in 14 years .

Houston Astros manager AJ Hinch watched his team load the bases in front of hot-hitting Evan Gattis, and all he wanted was the big designated hitter to send a drive to the outfield and keep the line moving.
Hinch had to settle for one that cleared the fence.
Cleared the bases, too.
Gattis crushed a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning Friday night, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa also went deep, and the Astros rolled past the Kansas City Royals 7-3 for their ninth straight win.
”We’re shaking hands after a lot of his at-bats Martin Fehervary Capitals Jersey ,” Hinch said of Gattis, who has five homers in the first eight games of the Astros’ road trip. ”When guys are hot, there’s a ton of energy and a ton of fun.”
Charlie Morton (8-1) overcame another bout of wildness, at one point walking three straight batters, to last six innings for Houston. He allowed four hits and four walks while striking out nine.
Brad Peacock, Tony Sipp and Collin McHugh each contributed a scoreless inning in relief to wrap up the Astros’ latest win. All but one during their streak has come away from Minute Maid Park.
”I think our guys are just methodically going through their days,” Hinch said. ”This is a long road trip and it’s a lot more fun when you’re winning.”
The Royals, meanwhile, have lost four straight and 10 of 11.
Jakob Junis (5-7) served up all three Houston homers, getting tagged for six runs on seven hits and a walk. It was his fourth straight loss Marlon Mack Jersey , his last win coming against the New York Yankees on May 18.
”We were putting some really good swings on it. We were hitting some balls hard,” Morton said with a grin. ”Really, I was just waiting for the dam to break.”
The Royals gave Junis some support early, jumping ahead 2-0 in the third on a two-out double by Mike Moustakas. It was a buoying at-bat considering the meek-hitting Kansas City lineup managed a single run in getting swept by Cincinnati during a two-game set this week.
It appeared the lead might stand, too, the way Junis breezed through the first three innings.
Bregman changed all that with his ninth homer of the season, a shot that just skirted the left-field foul pole. Correa added his 455-foot home run two batters later to tie the game.
Morton’s wildness allowed the Royals to regain the lead in the fifth, but Junis coughed it back up in the sixth. He gave up three straight one-out singles to load the bases for Gattis, whose soaring, 405-foot grand slam was the second of his career and third by the Astros this season.
It was also the second slam permitted by the Royals in their last two games.
”I was hoping we would get either a flyout or a mishit. I didn’t think I left it right over the plate Christine Michael Sr Jersey ,” Junis said. ”I thought it was up and away. He just put a good swing on it.”
ASTROS MOVES
Houston recalled 3B Tyler White from Triple-A Fresno and placed LHP Reymin Guduan on the paternity leave list. White was hitting .338 with 13 homers and a .444 on-base percentage, the second-highest in all of Triple-A. Guduan can miss no more than three games while on the paternity list.
ROYALS MOVES
Kansas City selected the contract of RHP Brandon Maurer from Triple-A Omaha and optioned RHP Jason Adam to the same club. Maurer was 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA for the Royals before he was sent outright to the minor league club on May 3. He’s worked 11 straight scoreless appearances at Omaha.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Astros RHP Joe Smith (elbow inflammation) rejoined the team, and Hinch said the reliever is ”pain free and the next step is to initiate a throwing program.” That could happen by the end of the weekend.
Royals OF Jorge Soler left after stumbling out of the batter’s box in the sixth. He was taken for X-rays that revealed a broken left foot. ”It will be awhile when your feet are hurt,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. ”They’re going to give it a CT scan or whatever. We’ll have a better idea. X-rays showed a positive break. We don’t think it’s a surgical thing right now. The CT scan will give us more of a look.”
UP NEXT
Struggling LHP Dallas Keuchel (3-8, 4.45 ERA) starts for the Astros and LHP Danny Duffy (3-6, 5.28) gets the nod for the Royals for a Saturday matinee with temperatures expected to approach triple digits.
Houston ace Justin Verlander made two mistakes Ryan Suter Jersey , both resulting in home runs. The way the Astros are swinging the bats these days, it hardly mattered.
Verlander pitched five-hit ball over seven innings and the Astros jumped out to another early lead, beating the Oakland Athletics 7-3 Thursday for their eighth straight win.
Brian McCann homered for the first time in nearly a month. Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve and Josh Reddick were among five players with two hits apiece as Houston completed the three-game sweep.
”It happens fast when we’re at our best,” Astros manager AJ Hinch said. ”We can get after you and then we stay after you. We’re not going to be perfect all the time . but when we are good like this and putting up runs, we’re pretty tough.”
Evan Gattis, who set a franchise record with five RBIs in each of the first two games of the series, went 1 for 5 and didn’t drive in a run.
Beyond that, it was another in a series of impressive offensive displays from the Astros.
The winning streak is their longest since they won 11 straight May 25-June 5 last season on the way to their first World Series championship. Houston also improved to 8-1 against Oakland this season.
”It’s nice to have your team hot, you just want to be the guy to keep it going,” Verlander said. ”The run support is awesome. It’s fun to be a part of keeping the rhythm and keeping the momentum on our side.”
Khris Davis and Matt Olson homered for the A’s. It was Davis’ third home run in three consecutive at-bats after going deep in his final two plate appearances Wednesday.
Both home runs came off Verlander, who went into the day leading the majors with a 1.45 ERA.
Still, Verlander (9-2) was sharp in his first appearance against the A’s since 2016. He faced three batters over the minimum before Oakland scored twice in the seventh.
The six-time All-Star allowed three runs Tyler Ennis Jersey , struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter while earning his fifth consecutive win.
”I felt like I navigated the lineup pretty well,” Verlander said. ”Really, one not well-executed pitch I would like back and another pitch selection I would like back.”
The Astros outscored the A’s 26-11 in the series and have a 69-20 run differential in the last eight games between the two division rivals. They also got some help from Oakland third baseman Matt Chapman, who committed a pair of errors that led to a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.
Frankie Montas (3-1) gave up five earned runs and 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked four.
”That’s good team that’s swinging the bat real well right now,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. ”Looked like every ball he got in the middle of the plate they hit.”
ROSTER JUGGLE
RHP Trevor Cahill (Achilles strain) was placed by Oakland on the 10-day disabled list for the second time this season. RHPs Chris Bassitt and Carlos Ramirez were called up from Triple-A Nashville. Reliever Danny Coulombe was optioned down.
ONE STREAK ENDS, ANOTHER CONTINUES
Houston 3B Alex Bregman went hitless in four at-bats, ending his hitting streak at 10 games. But Bregman drew a walk to extend his on-base streak to 25 games, the second-longest active mark in the majors behind Shin-Soo Choo of Texas (28).
TRAINER’S ROOM
Astros: Bregman was back in the lineup after getting a rest day Wednesday.
Athletics: Chapman left the game with a bruised right hand that has been bothering him since spring training. He was expected to be taken for an MRI after the game. Cahill is nursing a strained right Achilles and is wearing a walking boot. He hasn’t responded to treatment and there is no timetable for his return. … Matt Joyce (lumbar strain) will take full batting practice Friday and begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville on Monday.
UP NEXT
Astros: RHP Charlie Morton (7-1, 2.82 ERA) attempts to become Houston’s fourth starter with eight wins or more when he pitches in Kansas City on Friday night.
Athletics: RHP Chris Bassitt (0-1, 1.29), who was called up from Triple-A Nashville, will pitch against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. Bassitt is taking Cahill’s spot in the rotation.

Wil Myers helped give the San Diego Padres an early lead and closer Brad Hand barely held onto it.
Myers homered, doubled and drove in three runs patrick mahomes authentic jersey , and rookie Joey Lucchesi threw five scoreless innings to lead San Diego to a 4-3 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.
The Padres had to hang on after Hand got himself into trouble in the ninth and then got out of it to earn his 23rd save, thanks to some help from right fielder Hunter Renfroe.
Hand gave up two quick runs on doubles by Elias Diaz and Austin Meadows, and a triple by Gregory Polanco. The reliever got Jordy Mercer to fly out to Renfroe in shallow right field. Renfroe then caught pinch-hitter Jose Osuna’s foul ball near the seats and made a strong throw to hold Polanco at third. Hand struck out Starling Marte to end it.
”I don’t think he lacks for confidence,” Padres manager Andy Green said of Hand, San Diego’s only All-Star last year. ”He’s got those situations where he’s just got to finish his pitches better than he did tonight. He doesn’t rattle. You’ve got one of the faster runners in the game on third base with nobody out and a one-run game, and there’s not many pitchers that are getting out of that. He managed to get out of that.”
Said Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle: ”It’s a life of a closer. If you look at the numbers against him all year, he’s tough to hit. He’s been very successful. … I thought some breaking balls got left over the plate.”
Myers, limited to 19 games this season due to injuries, homered to right off Trevor Williams (6-6) with one out in the third, his second. Myers then chased the San Diegan with a two-run double to left to give the Padres a 4-0 lead with two outs in the fifth.
Myers returned June 21 after missing 47 games with a strained muscle in his side.
”He’s getting closer and closer and is looking more like himself,” Green said.
The manager was impressed with Myers using all fields.
”I feel good,” Myers said. ”It’s just one of those things where you constantly work on your approach.”
San Diego won for just the third time in 13 games.
Williams, a 2010 graduate of Rancho Bernardo High patrick mahomes stitched jersey , was trying to become the second straight local product to beat his hometown Padres. On Friday night, Joe Musgrove, a 2011 graduate of Grossmont High in suburban El Cajon, threw seven scoreless innings in a 6-3 victory.
But Williams gave up four runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, with four strikeouts and two walks. He also allowed an RBI grounder by Freddy Galvis in the second that brought in Christian Villanueva, who doubled and advanced on Jose Pirela’s single.
Williams walked Austin Hedges and pinch-hitter Matt Szczur with one out in the fifth. They advanced on Travis Jankowski’s sacrifice bunt ahead of Myers’ big double.
”I kind of lost my fastball command in that fifth inning, and I had to rely on my off-speed pitches,” Williams said. ”I kind of put myself in bad situations. Two walks in a row are tough. You can’t really defend walks. Wil Myers is a good hitter and he guessed right on a heater up, and did well.”
Lucchesi (4-3) won for the first time since April 28. He was making his third start since missing five weeks with a strained right hip. The left-hander allowed one hit while striking out five and walking four.
San Diego’s Matt Strahm yielded a run and two hits in the sixth.

Pirates: RHP Jameson Taillon (5-6, 3.96 ERA) is 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA in two career starts against San Diego.
Padres: RHP Tyson Ross (5-5, 3.32) is scheduled for the Padres, who have won seven of his last nine starts.
The Super Bowl will have the usual flyover – except it will be anything but normal.
U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight is scheduled to perform the flyover at the start of the game Sunday. The Heritage Flight will consist of one F-16 Fighting Falcon http://www.officialoilers.com/authentic-adidas-connor-mcdavid-jersey , two A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, and one P-51 Mustang flying in formation over U.S. Bank Stadium. This is the first time the Heritage Flight team will conduct a flyover for a Super Bowl, and it will be broadcast live on NBC and in U.S. Bank Stadium from multiple vantage points, including from a camera mounted on the P-51 Mustang.
The teams in the flyover for the game will be the F-16 Viper demonstration team from Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina; the A-10 Thunderbolt demonstration team from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona; and a vintage P-51 Mustang from the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation in California.
”Never before in my more than 35-year flying career have I flown over the world’s biggest sports stage: 111 million eyeballs is quite the audience,” says Steve Hinton, who will pilot the P-51. ”I’m extremely proud to represent the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation and fly alongside Air Combat Command pilots to honor the countless servicemen and women past and present who selflessly serve our country.”
Hinton has logged more than 7,000 flight hours with World War II fighters at air shows all over the world.
”This particular warbird, Sierra Sue II, is one of my favorites to fly,” he says, adding he hopes he will be ”inspiring a new generation of pilots.”
How fast can vintage airplanes fly? At the same speed as current aircraft for the flyover. They will travel in formation at approximate speeds of 315 to 345 mph at an elevation of 1,000 feet above U.S. Bank Stadium.
”The P-51 Mustang is the most iconic fighter plane from World War II and a powerful symbol of the United States’ aviation combat history,” Hinton explains. ”It was a remarkable aircraft during its era, armed with high-caliber machine guns and the ability to carry bombs, rockets and fuel tanks under its wings. By the end of World War II, P-51s had had destroyed almost 5 Mikael Granlund Jersey ,000 enemy aircraft in the air, more than any other fighter in Europe. It’s a popular fixture in the Heritage Flight performances.”
Flying Sierra Sue II is fitting: In 2015, the plane joined the Wings of the North vintage aircraft collection as the cornerstone of its new museum in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Eric Thames has a penchant for game-changing home runs this season.
Thames hit a two-run homer that accounted for the game’s only runs as the Milwaukee Brewers slipped past the Minnesota Twins 2-0 on Tuesday. Thames has three home runs in the past six games.
”I’d say that’s a hot streak,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.
Eight of Thames’ 12 homers have put the Brewers on the board and seven have given his team a lead.
Milwaukee broke through in the fifth against Minnesota starter Jake Odorizzi (3-6) when pinch-hitter Nate Orf walked and stole second before Thames lined a homer that just cleared the right-field fence.
”It was a cutter that didn’t get in far enough,” Odorizzi said. ”I just didn’t execute it, plain and simple. I just didn’t get enough break on it. Right pitch, just bad execution and it turns out to be the deciding factor.”
Thames reached base three times in four at-bats. After the game, he credited Milwaukee’s pitching, which held Minnesota to two hits.
”Our bullpen has been the hammer for us,” Thames said. ”They have been the ones to pick us up, but we need to start scoring more, getting guys on base and driving them in and give them breathing room.”
It wasn’t just the bullpen on this day.
Milwaukee starter Junior Guerra (5-5) pitched five shutout innings. He gave up two hits while walking three and striking out eight and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first after giving up a double and two walks.
”Being able to put up a zero up there and not let them score was very big,” Guerra said through team translator Carlos Brizuela. ”Walks are very lethal, especially for a starter.”
Josh Hader pitched a season-high three innings in relief for the Brewers and didn’t allow a hit. Closer Corey Knebel notched his ninth save in 11 attempts by striking out the side in the ninth.
Both starting pitchers held their opponents in check but struggled with high pitch counts. Guerra threw 89 pitches. Odorizzi gave up two runs and four hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out nine but threw 109 pitches.
The Twins fell to 1-7 on their current nine-game road trip.
INFIELD INACTIVITY
The Twins became the first team whose first baseman, Joe Mauer, played an entire game and had no putouts or assists since Edwin Encarnacion did it with Toronto against Baltimore on Aug. 25, 2012. This has happened just six other times in the past 20 years and never to the Twins.
”There wasn’t a ground ball today Youth Mikko Koivu Jersey , which is a baseball oddity,” Molitor said. ”I can’t really explain it other than Odorizzi, we know, is a fly ball guy.”
CHOKED UP
In the ninth, home plate umpire Marty Foster called Jake Cave out on strikes but didn’t raise his arm right away with the signal, prompting an argument from Molitor.
”It looked like, as simply as I can state it, that he wasn’t going to make the call,” Molitor said. ”Jake made the mistake of walking away, and it looked like (Foster) put his arm up after the fact. He said that he had called it right away but that he was choking on his Nicorette mints.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Twins: Recalled LHP Gabriel Moya from Triple-A Rochester and optioned RHP Zack Littell to Rochester. Littell was the losing pitcher in Monday’s 10-inning game. …2B Brian Dozier didn’t start so he could rest but entered the game in the seventh. ”It’s always tough to sit (Dozier),” Molitor said. ”I think if he had his druthers, he would play 162 games and start them all.”
Brewers: OF Christian Yelich didn’t start for the fifth consecutive game due to lower back tightness but entered in the ninth as a defensive replacement. ..OF Lorenzo Cain (left groin strain) is eligible to come off the DL on Wednesday, but Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he likely won’t be in the lineup right away. ”There’s enough caution there that we’ve got to get over the last hurdle,” Counsell said. ”We’re not to 100 percent yet.” … RHP Zach Davies (right shoulder tightness) is dealing with back soreness and stiffness. ”He won’t throw until that’s gone,” Counsell said. ”That’s going to set him back.”
UP NEXT
Twins: Jose Berrios (8-6, 3.52 ERA) gets the start in the three-game series finale. Berrios will face the Brewers for the first time in his career.
Brewers: Chase Anderson (6-6, 4.18) has held opponents to a .208 batting average this season.
Spotting opponents an early lead hasn’t been a problem lately for Anthony Rizzo and the Chicago Cubs.
Rizzo drove in his second run of the game in the seventh inning to snap a tie Jeremy Kerley Jersey , Kyle Schwarber followed with a solo homer in the eighth and the Cubs rebounded from an early three-run deficit to edge the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Tuesday for their fifth straight win.
The other team has scored first in each of Chicago’s recent victories, but the Cubs have kept chipping away.
”We know we’re a good team,” Rizzo said. ”We just have to string together good at-bats.”
The Cubs did just that again on Tuesday.
With one out in the seventh, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist singled off Tigers reliever Daniel Stumpf (1-4). Rizzo’s slow bouncer up the middle resulted in a force of Zobrist at second, but Jose Iglesias’ throw to first was too late to double up Rizzo and Heyward scored from third to put Chicago ahead for the first time, 4-3.
Schwarber hit his team-leading 17th homer to right against a steady wind off Lake Michigan in the eighth.
Trailing 3-0, Albert Almora, Jr. and Heyward each drove in a run with a double, then Rizzo followed with an RBI single in Chicago’s three-run fifth.
Rizzo has just one homer in his past 20 games – and 12 this season – after launching at least 31 in each of the past four seasons. But the Cubs slugger says the longball isn’t always the best approach.
”You get down and start battling (at) two strikes, it’s not about hitting a homer,” Rizzo said. ”It’s just about putting the ball in play and we’re doing a good job at that.”
Justin Wilson (3-2), the second of Chicago’s four relievers, pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win. Pedro Strop pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save in four chances.
The Cubs’ bullpen allowed just one hit after starter Kyle Hendricks labored through five innings, allowing three runs and seven hits in a no-decision. In his past six starts, the right-hander is 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA.
”They didn’t beat him up by any means today,” manager Joe Maddon said. ”It’s just that it wasn’t a typical surgeon-like procedure from Kyle. He looks good, he’s just not executing.”
Detroit leadoff hitter Mikie Mahtook had three singles and scored a run. Niko Goodrum drove in a run with a double, and Jeimer Candelario and James McCann each had an RBI as the Tigers lost their 12th game in their past 14.
Tigers starter Michael Fulmer went six innings and allowed three runs – all in the fifth – and seven hits.
”He had really good stuff,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. ”He got a couple of pitches up a bit, but they kind of put them in the right place.
”It wasn’t like they were lashing them, but they put them on the outfield grass, kind of like what we did to them early.”
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. After Mahtook and Nick Castellanos led off with singles, Candelario drove in a run with a groundout. Goodrum’s double to the right-field corner scored the second run.
The Tigers added a run in the fourth on McCann’s RBI single.
The Cubs tied it 3-all in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Tommy LaStella Micah Hyde Jersey , Almora and Heyward led off with consecutive doubles to cut it to 3-2, then Rizzo’s hit with one out tied it.
WINDY CITY TIGER
INF/OF Jim Adduci, called up from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, was in Detroit’s lineup at first base and singled and scored in his first game this season. The 33-year-old attended Evergreen Park High School in Chicago’s south suburbs and grew up a fan of both the Cubs and White Sox. Adduci’s father, also named Jim, played a total of 70 games with three major league teams in the 1980s and was at Wrigley Field on Tuesday.
TRAINER’S ROOM:
Cubs: INF/OF Kris Bryant (left shoulder inflammation) probably will return Wednesday or Friday, Maddon said after the game. The Cubs star has been sidelined since June 22. … RHP Yu Darvish (right triceps inflammation, right elbow impingement/inflammation) rejoined the Cubs after seeing Dr. Keith Meister in Texas on Friday and getting a cortisone shot. Maddon said he still hadn’t yet talked to the right-hander about his progress following the injection.
UP NEXT:
Tigers LHP Francisco Liriano (3-4. 3.99) takes the mound against Cubs LHP Jose Quintana (6-6. 4.31) on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of the two-game interleague set. Liriano has lost both of his starts since coming off the disabled list (right hamstring strain) on June 23. Quintana has two losses and three no-decisions in his past five starts and hasn’t won since May 31.

The Jacksonville Jaguars heard the chatter, read the tweets and Instagram posts. And they got a little confused.
Why were the Pittsburgh Steelers talking about the New England Patriots? Didn’t they have to face the Jaguars first before reaching a rematch with the Super Bowl champions?
”I don’t know if they misread the schedule or didn’t play us this week, but they didn’t acknowledge us at all,” Jacksonville linebacker Myles Jack said. ”And we didn’t take that too kindly.”
Not at all. That shouldn’t be a problem going forward.
The Jaguars, yes the Jaguars, have the NFL’s full attention now. A trip to Foxborough on the horizon, too.
Dominant at the start and resilient at the finish, Jacksonville stunned the Steelers 45-42 on Sunday to advance to the AFC title game for the third time in franchise history and maybe, finally, earn a bit of respect.
Leonard Fournette ran for 109 yards and three scores . Embattled quarterback Blake Bortles added 214 yards passing and a pivotal fourth-quarter touchdown as the third-seeded Jaguars (12-6) beat the second-seeded Steelers (13-4) at Heinz Field for the second time in three months.
The victory in October served notice Jacksonville was ready to put a decade of losing firmly behind. This one sent an even bigger message: overlook the Jaguars at your own peril, something Pittsburgh appeared to do in the run-up. Coach Mike Tomlin hinted at facing the Patriots twice back in December. Running back Le’Veon Bell posted on Twitter about the pair of “round 2s” the Steelers will face in coming weeks.
Turns out, one rematch is all the Steelers will get.
”We knew we had this team’s number,” Jacksonville safety Barry Church said. ”All we did was feed on the fuel that everybody was providing, the media, everybody was talking about how they’re going to run through us, it’s not going to be like last (time). Blake Bortles this. Blake Bortles that. all he did was dominate their defense.”
A week removed from an ugly performance in a wild-card round win over Buffalo in which he passed for 87 yards and struggled with the easiest of throws Nick O'Leary Jersey , Bortles went 14 of 26 for a touchdown without an interception. He ran for 35 more and wasn’t sacked by a defense that led the NFL and set a franchise record with 55 during the season. Jacksonville’s 45 points tied the most ever allowed by the Steelers in the playoffs.
Not bad for an offense that at times simply appeared along for the ride as the NFL’s top defense carried the load.
”Blake Bortles has always been criticized,” Fournette said. ”It is different now. He has guys that have his back, especially me.”
Certainly looked it as Fournette scored two first-quarter touchdowns. The Jaguars built a 21-point lead and responded whenever the Steelers rallied to get within one score.
”The guys played with confidence all day long,” Bortles said. ”Obviously, what they have on their side of the ball, it’s a good team. We know they got a good offense. We knew we were going to have to be efficient, hold on to the ball for a little bit, so we did it.”
Ben Roethlisberger threw for 469 yards and set a franchise record with five touchdown passes, but was also intercepted once and had a fumble returned for a score. All-Pro Antonio Brown caught seven passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in his return from a left calf injury. Bell had 155 yards of total offense and two scores.
But Pittsburgh’s vaunted ”Killer Bs” couldn’t keep pace with Jacksonville, one of four NFL franchises to never make the Super Bowl.
”It’s disheartening,” Brown said. ”I thought we had the right group of guys.”
The Jaguars dominated the Steelers on Oct. 8, winning by three touchdowns in a performance so overwhelming Roethlisberger only half-jokingly wondered aloud whether he still had ”it’ after throwing a career-high five picks.
Roethlisberger and his teammates left little doubt they hoped for a rematch, though Jacksonville cornerback A.J. Bouye cautioned Pittsburgh to be careful what it wished for. The Jaguars hardly appeared intimidated by the 18-degree chill or trying to earn their first road playoff win in a decade.
”I’m sure there will still be tons of people that are going to disapprove and talk negative or hate or do whatever they want,” Bortles said. ”But we get to keep playing and we get an opportunity to play in Foxborough next week for another week. Just honored to be able to do this especially with this group of guys.”
”It’s been an awesome year. Just want to keep it going.”
FOURTH AND WOE
Pittsburgh rolled up 545 yards of offense, but it’s 2 yards the Steelers didn’t get that helped send them into an offseason filled with questions.
Twice Pittsburgh had fourth-and-1 in Jacksonville territory. Twice the Steelers did something other than have the 6-foot-5 Roethlisberger sneak. Pittsburgh ran wide in the first quarter and Bell was stuffed for a 4-yard loss. The Jaguars responded immediately by going 75 yards in 11 plays, the final one a 4-yard sprint by T.J. Yeldon that put them up 21-0.
The Steelers were down a touchdown early in the fourth quarter and had fourth-and-inches at the Jacksonville 39. Roethlisberger checked at the line of scrimmage, faked a handoff to Bell and instead threw incomplete to diving rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster .
”It’s been a while since I’ve run a quarterback sneak, I’m for it,” said Roethlisberger, who added he wi
The better J.A. Happ pitches for the Toronto Blue Jays Dion Dawkins Jersey , the better the chance he finishes the season with another team.
Happ pitched a season-high 8 1/3 innings to win his fifth straight decision, Kendrys Morales hit a two-run home run and the Blue Jays beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 Wednesday for Toronto’s seventh win in eight home games.
Happ (9-3) allowed four runs and six hits, walked none and struck out eight. The veteran left-hander is the first big league pitcher to record four starts this season with at least eight strikeouts and no walks.
”He’s got good life on his fastball,” Atlanta’s Nick Markakis said. ”He’s always been a thorn in the side.”
With Toronto well behind in both the AL East and the wild card standings, Happ could be a candidate for a midseason trade to a contender.
”I know he’s in demand and I can see why,” Toronto manager John Gibbons said. ”If we were on the other end of it, I’d want him, too.”
Happ is in the final season of a three-year, $36 million contract.
”I signed to play here and try to help this team get to the playoffs,” Happ said. ”I know there may be rumors out there, but I like it here and my focus is here.”
Happ improved 4-0 with a 2.72 ERA in nine career starts against the Braves.
”We knew going in it was going to be a tough ride,” Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said.
Happ had retired 18 of 19 before Freddie Freeman and Markakis hit back-to-back singles with one out in the ninth.
Ryan Tepera came on and gave up an RBI single to Kurt Suzuki, struck out Charlie Culberson Eddie Yarbrough Jersey , then allowed an RBI single to Ender Inciarte, putting the tying run at second. Tepera finished it by getting Johan Camargo to fly out, earning his fifth save in eight opportunities
Morales, who turned 35 Wednesday, went 2 for 3 and scored twice. He homered in the first, walked and scored in the fourth, singled in the fifth, and flied out in the eighth.
Suzuki and Peter Bourjos hit solo home runs for the Braves, who lost for the second time in eight games. Atlanta began the day with an NL-best record of 43-29.
Braves right-hander Anibal Sanchez (3-1) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings.
”It wasn’t bad, wasn’t great,” Snitker said. ”He kept us in the game, gave us a chance.”
Sanchez is 0-2 with a 9.19 ERA in his past three starts against the Blue Jays.
After Morales hit a two-out drive off Sanchez, his sixth homer of the season Star Lotulelei Jersey , Suzuki connected in the second, his eighth, and Bourjos tied it in the third with his first homer of the season.
Toronto broke the deadlock in the fourth when Randal Grichuk hit an RBI double and Aledmys Diaz followed with a sacrifice fly.
Blue Jays infielder Yangervis Solarte made it 5-2 with a two-out RBI single off A.J. Minter in the seventh.
WALK THIS WAY
Blue Jays C Russell Martin has walked at least once in eight straight games, matching a career-long stretch. Martin, who walked twice Wednesday, also walked in eight straight in 2013.
BIRTHDAY BLASTS
Morales has four home runs and eight RBIs in eight career games on his birthday.
THRIVING WITH FIVE
Toronto is 28-1 when scoring five or more runs.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Braves: Markakis started at designated hitter, the first time this season he hasn’t played one of the corner outfield spots.
Blue Jays: RHP Marcus Stroman (shoulder) will be activated off the disabled list to start at the Angels on Saturday, Gibbons said. Stroman is 0-5 with a 7.71 ERA in seven starts. … 3B Josh Donaldson (left calf) left the team Wednesday and will continue working out at Toronto’s spring training facility in Florida. Donaldson will not begin a rehab assignment until he is able to run the bases at full speed.
UP NEXT
Braves: Atlanta is off Thursday before opening a three-game home series against Baltimore on Friday. LHP Sean Newcomb (8-2, 2.70 ERA) starts for the Braves. Newcomb has won eight of his past nine decisions. The Orioles have not named a starter.
Blue Jays: RHP Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 4.35) starts the opener of a four-game series against the Angels. Sanchez is 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three June starts. LHP Tyler Skaggs (6-4, 2.81) starts for Los Angeles.

Kyle Freeland has a silhouette of a mountain range tattooed along his right arm.
So, no, the Denver native doesn’t mind pitching in a little thin air.
Freeland elevated his game once again at Coors Field and the Colorado Rockies scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on a throwing error by shortstop Brandon Crawford to rally for a 5-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
Freeland (8-6) settled in to go seven strong innings after surrendering a homer to Gorkys Hernandez on the first pitch of the game.
That mistake hardly weighed on him.
”There were a lot more pitches to be thrown Russell Bodine Jersey ,” said Freeland, who allowed three hits. ”You have to have faith in your offense they’ll come through for you.”
The left-hander hardly feels intimidated by the hitter’s park. Freeland has allowed three or fewer runs in all but one of his seven starts at Coors Field this season.
”To me, it’s still the game of baseball. You have to make your pitches,” Freeland said of his approach at Coors. ”If you don’t make your pitches, there’s a strong chance they’re going to get whacked – hard.”
Part of Freeland’s good groove of late has to do with the development of his changeup. He’s throwing it with confidence – and success.
”There is a poise factor that comes into play when you’re playing this game,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. ”He’s learning this at the highest level. … I love the day that Kyle pitches.”
Scott Oberg threw the eighth and Wade Davis worked his way around a one-out double by Buster Posey in the ninth for his 24th save. He struck out Crawford to end the game.
Madison Bumgarner (1-3) was cruising along until the seventh when he began to unravel. After allowing three straight singles, he was replaced by reliever Reyes Moronta, who walked Nolan Arenado and then allowed the tying run on a double play. Ian Desmond followed with a roller that Crawford gobbled up only to throw wide to first, allowing the tiebreaking run to score.
”Just didn’t throw it 100 percent. I gave it about an 80-percent throw,” Crawford explained. ”One-hopper, I had time.”
Pinch-hitter Tom Murphy added an insurance run in the eighth, with Charlie Blackmon bringing in another on a sacrifice fly. Arenado finished 2 for 3 with two walks.
Bumgarner ran his streak to 22 scoreless innings before it came to a halt in the seventh when he was charged with three runs, two earned. Before Monday Phillip Gaines Jersey , the left-hander hadn’t allowed a run since June 16 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
”I don’t care about the streak. I’m just trying to win,” Bumgarner said. ”That’s a tough loss. Everything was going our way early on and didn’t go our way late. That’s all there is to it.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Giants: RHP Johnny Cueto (elbow) was schedule to throw a bullpen session Monday in Sacramento, while RHP Jeff Samardzija (shoulder) was slated to make a rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento. ”It’s a fairly big day in Sacramento,” manager Bruce Bochy cracked. ”Tomorrow, we’ll have a plan.”
Rockies: RHP Bryan Shaw (right calf strain) had a bullpen session Monday and ”threw the ball well,” Black said. Shaw will throw a simulated game Wednesday and may soon go out on a rehab assignment. … RHP Chad Bettis wore white tape on his middle finger after developing a hot spot during Sunday’s start. Bettis was pulled after three innings. ”We’re concerned about him for sure,” Black said.
GREAT GRABS
Austin Slater played a big role in keeping the Rockies off the scoreboard early by making a sliding catch in left field to end the third with the bases loaded. Slater also had a diving catch in the second.
UP NEXT
Giants: RHP Chris Stratton (8-5, 4.45 ERA) faces the Rockies on Tuesday for a second time in less than a week. He allowed five runs over four innings last Thursday.
Rockies: RHP Antonio Senzatela (2-1, 6.23) will be recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque and make his first start of the season Tuesday. He takes the place of opening day starter Jon Gray, who was optioned to Triple-A over the weekend.
PHOENIX — Right-hander Yoshihisa Hirano has been spectacularly efficient in his first season in Arizona Logan Paulsen Color Rush Jersey , part of the reason the Diamondbacks will enter their four-game series against the San Diego Padres with the best bullpen ERA in the majors.
Hirano may be a major league rookie, but his work the last five seasons as a closer with the Orix Buffaloes in Japan has translated well.
Hirano, 34, had a franchise-record 26-game scoreless streak broken in an 8-4 loss to St. Louis on Wednesday, when he finished one scoreless appearance short of tying former Red Sox right-hander Koji Uehara for the longest such streak by a Japanese-born pitcher in major league history. Even that loss could not diminish the value Hirano has had this season.
Arizona right-hander Shelby Miller is scheduled to face San Diego left-hander Eric Lauer in the first game of the series Thursday.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was Boston’s bench coach when Uehara set the record in 2013, so he can provide a comparison of Uehara and Hirano.
“They have the same work habits, which is pretty impressive,” Lovullo said. “They both come in and get their work done pregame. They come in and get their work done postgame. They find themselves healthy and strong and prepared for every single one of their outings.
“They both have a fearlessness to their game and an approach to understanding what needs to happen during each at-bat. They are not afraid to put the ball on the plate with two different pitches. They go out and expect to get outs. Very similar mind-set. Very similar makeup. Very similar confidence.”
Hirano is 2-0 with a 1.43 ERA in 42 appearances. He has 19 holds, fourth in the majors, and he has permitted only one of his 16 inherited runners to score while being primarily used in the seventh inning. Eighth-inning reliever Archie Bradley leads the majors with 22 holds and closer Brad Boxberger has 20 saves.
Uehara began the 2013 season in a similar setup role in the Boston bullpen before advancing to the closer’s role after injuries thinned the relief corps. He finished with 21 saves http://www.patriotsauthorizedshop.com/authentic-trent-brown-jersey , a 1.09 ERA and an 0.57 WHIP.
“As soon as he became the closer, he gave off a certain edge and a certain confidence that was noticeable,” Lovullo said.
“It’s as close to a slam dunk, shut-down ninth-inning save as I’ve ever seen. He had this ability to collect outs and get through innings in 12 pitches or less. It was so quick, the ninth inning was over before it even started. It was a very comfortable setting for all of us. You played the Boston Red Sox in 2013 for eight innings because the ninth inning was over. That’s what I remember.”
Hirano has a 1.01 WHIP, fourth among major league relievers with at least 40 appearances.
“He’s been very versatile,” Lovullo said. “He’s unfazed by any role we have asked him to do. He can pitch in traffic. He can start clean innings. He can get left-handers and right-handers out.”
The Diamondbacks lost two of three to St. Louis and have dropped five of their past six games overall. They took two out of three games in their only other series against the Padres this season, also at Chase Field.
San Diego has slumped over the last 2 1/2 weeks. The Padres have lost three in a row and are 3-13 since beating Atlanta 9-3 behind left-hander Clayton Richard on June 15. They have scored 30 runs in their last 10 games.
“We’re not getting hits with runners in scoring position,” San Diego manager Andy Green told reporters after a two-game sweep in Oakland.
“Sometimes the best thing you can do is relax, go play baseball and enjoy what you’re doing. Then the hits start coming.”
Christian Villanueva hit his 17th homer for the Padres in a 4-2 loss to the A’s Wednesday.
Miller is 2-2 with a 4.54 ERA in eight career appearances, including seven starts, against the Padres. He had a strong outing against them early last season, giving up four hits and one run in 7 1/3 innings in the third of his four starts before suffering the elbow injury.
Rookie Lauer joined the Padres’ rotation in late April and is 3-5 with a 5.08 ERA in 13 starts this season. He was 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA in six June starts and is 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA in seven road starts.
He has never faced the Diamondbacks.
Chiefs linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis has been charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, THC and drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop in suburban Kansas City on Thursday night.
Pierre-Louis also was charged with driving without a valid license and failure to display a valid plate or current registration. He pleaded not guilty to all charges in Johnson County District Court on Friday and was released after posting $2,500 bond.
Pierre-Louis is due back in court next Thursday.
The 26-year-old linebacker, who was acquired last offseason from the Seattle Seahawks, appeared in 13 regular-season games and the Chiefs’ playoff loss to the Tennessee Titans.
