Growing up in the shadows of Ibrox just around the corner from the club he supported all his life, Halliday is no stranger to going through the turnstiles as a Rangers follower rather than a Rangers player. When joining Mark Warburtons set-up in the summer, the midfielder spoke freely about achieving the dream of signing for the team he has idolised since childhood. Given his publicised affinity with the blue half of Glasgow, the 24-year-old Scot has been lauded by the Ibrox crowd for both his performances on the pitch and his visible passion for the football club.Halliday was vehemently backed by the Rangers fans earlier this season when he was given a second yellow card and subsequently sent off for allegedly inciting Greenock Morton supporters while celebrating a goal at Cappielow. Halliday (left) was shown a red card against Morton after allegedly inciting the home fans And now the former Bradford and Middlesbrough midfielder is hoping the backing continues in that vein as the team come up to a particularly important period of fixtures. He said: We have enjoyed a terrific season so far and playing in front of so many supporters at Ibrox has given all the players a lift.We have not won anything yet though and we will continue to work hard to win promotion to the top flight and be successful in the cup competitions. CINCINNATI -- A misplayed fly ball. A passed ball. Four walks in an inning. The St. Louis Cardinals did a lot of things wrong, and they added up to a third straight loss.Zack Cozart hit a pair of doubles during run-scoring innings that included St. Louis misplays, and the Cincinnati Reds pulled away to a 9-1 victory on Saturday that left the Cardinals treading water in the playoff chase. The Cardinals have lost seven of 11. Theyre still in position to get the NLs second wild-card spot, staying ahead of the Mets, Pirates and Marlins, but theyve wasted plenty of chances to make their playoff path easier. We havent put together that big inning, havent been able to string together hits, manager Mike Matheny said. And thats not all. Their bullpen and defense have let them down, too.Pinch hitter Ramon Cabreras two-run single in the seventh inning put the Reds ahead 4-1. Cincinnati used four walks by Jerome Williams to score five times in the eighth, capped by Tucker Barnharts bases-loaded double.Dan Straily (11-7) gave up three hits, including Jedd Gyorkos homer, and a career-high seven walks in only 5 2/3 innings. Gyorko hit his career-high 25th home run, 18 since the All-Star break. The Cardinals have homered in a club-record 22 straight games, hitting a total of 43 in that span. Only San Diego (25 games) has a longer streak this season. The 2002 Rangers set the major league record of 27.Cincinnati used a couple of Cardinals miscues to squeeze out two runs against Jaime Garcia (10-11). The lefty had allowed at least five runs in each of his last three starts.I thought I made good pitches when I needed to, said Garcia, who gave up six hits in six innings and fanned eight. They hit some stuff that found holes. But no excuses -- today, unfortunately, it wasnt good enough.Right fielder Stephen Piscotty lost track of Tyler Holts flyball in the third, letting it fall for a double. Holt scored on Cozarts two-out double.Another double by Cozart helped the Reds load the bases in the fifth, and Alberto Rosarios passed ball on a tailing sinker let in a run for a 2-1 lead. There was a lot of movement, but youve got to be ready for any situation, Rosario said through a translator. I just couldnt get a hold of it.IMPRESSIVE PLAYReds CF Billy Hamilton caught up with Rosarios fly to the warning track, smacked into the wall after making the catch, and threw back to the infield to double up a surprised Greg Garcia at first base to end the fourth inning.Garcia made a good, aggressive move, Matheny said. If the ball comes off the wall at all, hes going to score. He (Hamilton) closed a lot of space in a hurry and made a great play.AND ...Hamilton ran into umpire Angel Hernandez as he rounded first base and thought about trying for second on an errant throw in the seventh inning. Hamilton went down and had to stay at first for a while. He took second on his 58th steal of the season.GOLDEN TICKETJoey Votto used a song from Willy Wonka as his walk-up music for his first at-bat. The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has notified the UFC of a second failed drug test submitted by former heavyweight champion and WWE star Brock Lesnar.UFC officials were informed Tuesday that Lesnar, 39, failed a fight night drug test at UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas. Results showed the presence of the same unidentified banned substance Lesnar tested positive for on June 28.The substance that Lesnar tested positive for hasnt been officially identified, but a source told ESPN that the flagged substance is clomiphene, the same anti-estrogen blocker for which Jon Jones tested positive.Neither of those test results was available to the promotion on July 9, which is how Lesnar (6-3) was still able to fight Mark Hunt at T-Mobile Arena. Lesnar won the fight via unanimous decision.Lesnar, who is still under contract with the WWE and came out of retirement to face Hunt earlier this month, has not said much on the initial June 28 test. He told The Associated Press last week, We will get to the bottom of this. His appearance at UFC 200 marked Lesnars first professional fight since December 2011. His financial purse, as reported to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), was $2.5 million.Under the UFCs anti-doping program, which went into effect in July 2015, results management and adjudication of the case falls to USADA, although Lesnar will also be subject to the jurisdiction of the NSAC. The UFC and NSAC withhold the right to fine and suspend Lesnar, in the result of a confirmed doping violation. Lesnar has not publicly disclosed whether he intends to have his B-samples tested. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full fair legal review process that is afforded to all athletes before anyy sanctions are imposed, UFC said in a statement.dddddddddddd. The Nevada State Athletic Commission also retains jurisdiction over this matter as the sample collection was performed at UFC 200 in Las Vegas.Consistent with all previous potential anti-doping violations, additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.Hunt (12-11-1) was furious following news of Lesnars first potential doping violation. Late last week, the 42-year-old demanded Lesnars entire paycheck in a social media post. Hunts reported purse was $700,000.Lesnar, a former NCAA wrestling champion and two-time defending UFC champion, had never tested positive for a banned substance before the June 28 out-of-competition test. The UFCs anti-doping program requires any retired fighter be subject to a four-month testing window prior to resuming competition; however, the UFC elected to waive that requirement for Lesnar, whose fight against Hunt was announced one month prior to UFC 200.According to the USADA website, Lesnar submitted eight total samples to the anti-doping agency. USADA official Ryan Madden previously confirmed to ESPN that Lesnar had submitted multiple test samples before June 28 and that each came back clean. When asked about performance-enhancing drugs during an international conference call earlier this month, Lesnar responded: Im a white boy and Im jacked. Deal with it.Pending a successful appeal to the July 9 test, Lesnars victory against Hunt will likely change to a no-contest. Following his successful return at UFC 200, Lesnar had not indicated whether he wished to fight again. ' ' '
Kusal Perera will join the Sri Lanka squad two weeks after his provisional doping ban was lifted and may play in the second Test against England, live on Sky Sports 2. Sri Lanka confirmed the wicket-keeper and batsman, who will travel to England as soon as visa formalities are sorted out, will replace paceman Dhammika Prasad.Kusal will join the team as soon as possible and acclimatise, so he can do some serious work with the bat, Sri Lanka chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya told Cricinfo. Perera was cleared to play after the International Cricket Council lifted the provisional ban and all associated charges against him following concerns over the reliability of the drug test carried out by a World Anti-Doping Agency accredited laboratory in Qatar. Dhammika Prasad has gone home injured Perera had been the Test sides wicket-keeper and No 7 batsman before he was provisionally suspended for failing a doping test in December.Jayasuriya said the selection committee had chosen Perera to replace a bowler because Sri Lanka have enough bowlers in the squad. Weve picked out our three top players from the first Test between Sri Lanka and England In addition to the four frontline bowlers and two all-rounders who played in the Headingley Test, seamer Suranga Lakmal and off-spinner Dilruwan Perera sit in reserve. It is unlikely - though not impossible - that Perera will be available for the Test at Chester-le-Street, which begins on Friday. Steve Harmison was impressed by England against Sri Lanka and made a bold statement about the squad He will almost certainly be in contention for the third Test at Lords, which does not begin until June 9.Perera has been training at Sri Lankas national academy at Khettarama since May 13.Having begun his career as a limited-overs specialist, Perera had made a bright start to his Test career, hitting two rapid 50s in five innings so far. Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews claims they will be aiming to bounce back as soon as possible after defeat to England If he is selected, Sri Lanka also have the option of relieving Dinesh Chandimal of the gloves. The roster shuffle is over, the dust has settled and the landscape of competitive Dota 2 for the 2017 season is slowly shaping up. Though no majors have been set in stone, several LANs have been popping up for squads to start getting some matches under their belt before the first major on the road to TI7.MarsTV Dota 2 League is the first international LAN of the season, with four invited foreign teams and four Chinese squads traveling to Xiamen, China to compete from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2. Though a prize pool is a nice start, the real goal of MDL will be for team to gauge both others prowess and their own. Through a group stage and double-elimination bracket, there will be plenty of matches, but which teams are looking the strongest headed into the tournament?Group A: Veterans and NewbeesNewbee, Team Secret, LGD.Forever Young, MVP PhoenixThe top-billed Chinese squad here, Newbee might have struck some fear into the hearts of anyone just a few months ago. The fall roster shuffle was not kind to Newbee, however. Losing three members of its 2016 roster, only Damien kpii Chok and Hu Kaka Liangzhi remain. The newcomers are two former TongFu players and Newbee Youngs mid player Song Sccc Chun, who have had fair regional results but little international experience. Having gone 8-8 since forming the new Newbee, this roster hasnt done much to inspire confidence coming into MDL.Challenging for the top spot in this group will be Team Secret, which spent the offseason recruiting some of the best talent Southeast Asia had to offer. Pyo MP No-a and Lee Forev Sang-don step onto the team off a stellar run at TI6 with MVP Phoenix, and Yeik MidOne Nai Zheng takes over the mid lane after putting up a 4.24 overall KDA in Seattle. Theres no question this Team SEA-cret has the talent and skill, but a few questions linger. Theres just as much pressure to perform when the team puts together as impressive of a roster as last years version of all-star Secret, and tensions from TI6 (and even before then) could still be running high. Communication could also play a huge factor, with players from Korea, Malaysia, Estonia and Sweden.Looking for a strike back against their former teammates will be the remaining members of MVP Phoenix: Kim QO Seon-yeob, Kim Febby Yong-min and Kim DuBu Doo-young. Yong-mins switch from support to core will be one to watch, but eyes will also be on the promoted MVP Hot6 members Kim Velo Tae-sung and Lee Reisen Jun-yeong. This squad has already put up strong results against some SEA teams, though Yong-min has shined in his new role more than Tae-sung or Jun-yeong have in their matches. MVP Phoenix could still bring upsets to the group, but new blood means a little less confidence in its aggressive playstyle.LGD.Forever Young takes the final spot in group A, and though its a perceived underdog right now, this team is more intimidating than the name suggests. A few lesser-known names hide Xie Super Junhao, who played for Vici Gaming during TI4 and 5, and veteran captain Zhang xiao8 Ning, one of the few players who has competed in every International. The team has posted a 17-8 record in China since the end of TI6. There are no internationall results to go off, but those might not be necessary -- a combination of early experience against Chinese squads and some veteran knowledge, guided by The Director himself, could make LGD.dddddddddddd.FY a dark horse in MDL.Group B: Meet in the middle laneEvil Geniuses, OG, Vici Gaming, iG VitalityAll eyes are on Evil Geniuses in this group, where Artour Arteezy Babaev will debut in blue for the third time and Andreas Cr1t- Nielsen takes over in the captains chair. Though Babaev can be thought of as a new player, hes played a total of 453 games under the EG banner, holding a 66.67 percent win-rate. Nielsen will likely be the biggest X-factor, but a look at his record might inspire confidence. He tends to rack up wins in the first games with new teams, going 17-3 in his first 20 games on Monkey Business. Keep an eye on overall team cohesion and movements to see whether Nielsen can adjust to leading this American squad.European squad OG will also be coping with new changes, with Gustav s4 Magnusson taking up the offlane role and former Liquid support Jesse JerAx Vainikka in the four-role. Vainikkas record speaks for itself as one of the best players in Dota 2 in his role, but Magnusson is largely untested in the offlane, and that could be a weak point teams look to exploit. The other pressure point will be Anathan ana Pham, the surprise pickup in the mid lane. A former sub for Invictus Gaming, Pham held a 2.67 KDA across nine games with IG; not a promising record, but when hes on, he delivers results like the 3-0 at NEA 2016 three months ago. Look for Pham to live up to OGs playmaking legacy in the mid lane and provide momentum for this fresh squad in the group stage.Vici Gaming is, for the most part, Vici Reborn reformed. Four former Vici Gaming Reborn members assembled on the Vici proper roster is intimidating for many of these new rosters, who might not have the history and cohesion a cut-and-paste powerhouse team like Reborn might. There is one Achilles heel, though, in the mid lane -- Zheng ghost Jie, who is relatively unknown outside regional Chinese tournaments. Despite a 14-1 record in matchups since TI6, Jie will be matching up with some heavy talent in the mid lane in this group, and teams could easily look to take advantage.Rounding out group B is the second Chinese squad, Invictus Gaming Vitality. A sister squad to iG proper, there are few stars to look for here. A look at the overall record suggests some potential in IGV, as the team has put up wins against Newbee and tied LGD.FY in recent matches. Though the group stage is a little tenuous for this smaller squad, it could easily look to start knocking out other Chinese teams in the main bracket. IGV is a massive question mark against international teams, with barely any experience competing outside of China to speak of, but considering its recent record, this isnt the team to sleep on in group B either. Zhang Yuno Chengjun will be the key player for this team, as hes put up several impressive performances in recent matches as the teams hard carry. ' ' '
SEATTLE -- In the final home game of his Washington career, Kevin King gave the Huskies the jolt they needed. The cornerbacks one-handed interception was so good, even the officials were asking where it ranked. The ref asked me that where that ranked. In my mind its like (No.) 5 or 6, but in reality its No. 1 for sure, King said.Kings second-quarter interception awakened the slumbering Huskies, and quarterback Jake Browning went on to throw for 338 yards and two touchdowns and No. 7 Washington routed Arizona State 44-18 on Saturday night to stay in the College Football Playoff mix.Washingtons victory sets up one of the biggest Apple Cups ever Friday in Pullman against Washington State with the winner claiming the Pac-12 North title and a spot in the conference title game. The two are tied on top of the North Division standings after Washington States 38-24 loss at Colorado on Saturday. Now its kind of like everyone hoped it would be, Washington coach Chris Petersen said.Washington (10-1, 7-1 Pac-12) will likely to move up in both the AP Top 25 and the CFP ranking after snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Sun Devils. But the Huskies appeared to let last weeks loss to Southern California linger early before a 21-point second quarter put Washington fully in control.Browning completed 27 of 44 passes with 12 of those going to John Ross for 95 yards, the fourth-most catches in school history. Myles Gaskin ran for 127 yards and a 45-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.Arizona State is kind of a curveball team in terms of making things hard on you, Petersen said. They certainly did in the first half, they sort of took us out of our rhythm.Washingtons defense dominated from the outset, holding Arizona State (5-6, 2-6) to 48 yards in the first half and just 84 through three quarters before reserves took over. Arizona States Manny Wilkins was 20 of 32 passing for 227 yards but was sacked six times. NKeal Harry had six catches for 114 yards, but the Sun Devils managed only 15 yards rushing. The 15 yards rushing were the fewest allowed by Washington since holding Arizona to (minus)-7 in 2006.Jay Jay Wilson had Arizona States only touchdowns, catching a pair of fourth-down TDs in the fourth quarter. And if the night needed to be any wackier, Washington linebacker Keishawn Bierria scooped up an onside kick attempt and returned it for a touchdown with 6:03 remaining.Arizona State lost its fifth straight and must beat Arizona to be bowl eligible.Weve had our fair share of obstacles and weve played some really good people, Arizona State coach Todd Graham said. This was the best team in the league that weve played to this point, no doubt. The Huskies slogged through the first 16 minutes before King jolted Washington awake. The senior cornerback intercepted Wilkins pass in the end zone, making a spectacular one-handed grab just three plays after Browning was intercepted for the second time in the first half. That was amazing. That is first-round material right there, Bierria said. Two plays after Kings interception, Browning hit Chico McClatcher on a screen pass and the speedy wide receiver raced 75 yards to start Washingtons 21-point second quarter. Browning added a 46-yard TD pass to Dante Pettis, and was 6 of 6 for 61 yards on the last drive of the first half. Lavon Coleman finished off the final yard for a 24-0 halftime lead.POLL IMPLICATIONSWashington got help when Houston knocked off Louisville on Thursday night. Combined with lackluster wins by Ohio State and Michigan, the Huskies should gain some ground in the AP Top 25 . But at this point, its the College Football Playoff rankings that really matter to the Huskies.TURNING POINTIf there is such a thing in a 26-point win, it came in the opening moments of the second quarter. Browning was intercepted by Koron Crump, who returned the pick for a touchdown. But the TD was nullified by a blocking penalty at the 3 on Maurice Chandler. Instead of taking a 7-3 lead, the Sun Devils got nothing out of the turnover thanks to Kings interception.THE TAKEAWAYArizona State: The worst pass defense in the Pac-12 did get two interceptions but also gave up loads of yards. Browning was especially good in the second and third quarters, hitting receivers underneath the coverage and taking shots deep when available.Washington: The Huskies rediscovered their pass rush that had been missing the previous four weeks. Washington had four sacks in the first half, after having four sacks in the previous four games combined. Washington found success blitzing safeties Budda Baker and Ezekiel Turner. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays had no answers for Michael Fulmer or Victor Martinez, the two Detroit Tigers who did most of the damage in Friday nights 10-2 loss, the Rays 14th in 16 games.Fulmer, a rookie right-hander, gave up two hits in seven shutout innings. Martinez hit three-run homers from both side of the plate and the Tigers won their fourth straight. Its a good team over there, Rays starter Drew Smyly said. Sri Lankans 328 for 6 (Kaushal 80, Karunaratne 71, Linde 2-72) v South African Invitation XIScorecard Sri Lankas batsmen made a bright start to the tour of South Africa, as Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva hit half-centuries on the first day of the tour match in Potchefstroom. The visitors went to stumps at 328 for the loss of six wickets, against a South Africa Invitation XI consisting of well-heeled first-class players and recent graduates of the Under-19 system.Especially encouraging for the Sri Lankans was the 159-run unbroken opening stand between Karunaratne and Silva, each of whom has struggled at various points during the course of the year. Both men were retired out at the end of the 45th over, Karunaratne with 71 runs to his name and Silva with 80.Kusal Perera only hit 25, but his entry at No. 3 suggests the team management is keen for him to resume batting in the top order as he had done for much of the series against Australia. This would also allow Kusal Mendis to come in at second drop. Mendis, who was in good form during the back end of the ODI tri-series in Zimbabwe, hit 10 fours in his 64-ball 51.Captain Angelo Mathews and vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal, both returning from injury, collected a five-ball duck and 23 respectively, before de Silva ensured the day ended briskly, with five fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 57 off 67.The Invitation XIs batting appears its stronger suit, so it may be that a more thorough workout awaits the Sri Lankan bowlers than the batsmen, so far, have got. Left-arm spinner George Linde took 2 for 72 in the course of the day. Seamers Duanne Olivier and Jason Smith took one wicket each. Jordans China Free Shipping . ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Dustin Pedroia came through with another big homer against Huston Street. He almost didnt have the chance.Pedroia hit a go-ahead, three-run shot with two outs in the ninth inning and Xander Bogaerts followed with another homer to lead the Boston Red Sox over the Los Angeles Angels 5-3 Sunday.Street (3-2) entered with a 3-0 lead, walked Jackie Bradley Jr. and allowed Aaron Hills single. After a pair of strikeouts, Mookie Betts singled in a run and Pedroia homered to center on a 1-0 slider as Mike Trout climbed the center-field fence in vain. But Pedroia wouldnt even have been up to bat in the ninth had Red Sox manager John Farrell not come out to help him argue a called third strike in the fourth inning. Angels starter Tyler Skaggs looped a curveball high and outside for strike three and Pedroia immediately argued the call with home plate umpire Gabe Morales. Knowing how short-tempered Pedroia is, Farrell came out to finish the argument with crew chief Joe West and was quickly ejected.I just said, `Im only 5-foot-7, Im going to need a trampoline to hit that ball, Pedroia said. He was really good and had a good curveball all day. He didnt need any help.Pedroia hit his second go-ahead homer run in the ninth inning or later. The other was a tiebreaking, two-run drive off Street in the 10th inning of a 13-11 win at Colorado on June 24, 2010.We didnt have much going until the final inning and a couple of big swings from Petey and Bogey to get us to that spot in the ninth, Farrell said. We found a way to dig a little deeper before the 27th out was recorded. A big inning -- much needed- particularly to salvage a split in the series and to keep pace with where we are in this race.Bogaerts fell behind 0-2 in the count, then homered on another slider from Street, who blew a save for the third time in 12 chances. The Pedroia pitch, it just wasnt very sharp, it just kind of rolled in there, Street said. The right location I wanted to throw it in, just wasnt very sharp. Then after the homer, I thought I had (Bogaerts) and I just made a mistake. ... Its a terrible day and Im frustrated by it. Only thing I can do is wake up tomorrow. On the two-year anniversary of tearing his ulnar collateral ligament, Skaggs made just his second appearance since returning from Tommy John surgery and was on track for the win after five 1/3 scoreless innings.Got to get the first batter out of the way, but other than that it was a great performance, Skaggs said. I think the curveball was the key for me today. I threw it early and I threw it often, I threw it for a strike, I bounced it when I wanted to. It was a huge pitch for me.Clay Buchholz (4-9) pitched three scoreless innings, and Brad Ziegler got three outs for his 20th save in 23 opportunities.Knuckleballer Steven Wright allowed his first four batters to reach but didnt allow a run thanks to two alert plays he made.Yunel Escobar tried to score from second on Trouts single but stumbled past the plate as left fielder Bryce Brentzs throw got away from catcher Ryan Hanigan. Wright picked up the ball and tagged Escobar for the innings first out. After Albert Pujols single put runners at the corners, Aldrelton Simmons struck out out as the ball bounced off Hanigans glove and went to the backstop. The catcher then threw to the plate, where Wright tagged out Kole Calhoun.Wright took a ground ball from Trout off of his left forearm in the third but remained in the game. The collision took all three men out of contention when they had looked best placed to take the fight to polesitter Nico Rosbeg.Vettel, who was on the outside, said he could not see Raikkonen on the inside as he had got ahead of the other Ferrari before contact happened. Though Verstappen blamed both Ferrari drivers for the clash, Vettel does not think the Red Bull drivers move was ever likely to succeed.I had a very good start, I think the best start from the people who were in front of me, he said. I was P2 leading into... Nico was ahead but I was right behind on the outside leading the way into the first corner. Then I could hardly see Kimi because I was more than half a car length ahead when I turned in and to be honest he was already in the blind spot....To speak of Max, just looking at it now was a very bold move trying to recover those two places in one corner diving down the inside, that obviously was the reason why Kimi couldnt turn in and follow the lead that I was dictating as the leading car of that group. With hindsight its easy, I turn in later or go wider and only those two are making contact and I get away with it. The problem is that you cant fit three cars in that corner and the inside one of these able to trigger trouble on the outside which Kimi and myself suffered from.Verstappens aggressive defensive driving on Raikkonen at Les Combes later in the race led to an expletive-laden radio message from the Finn, before forcing Vettel wide at the same corner later in the race. The Dutch teenager then repeated the same move on Vettel, forcing the German wide and across the slip road.dddddddddddd?Vettel made it clear he has nothing wrong with Verstappen on a personal level, and respects his aggressive style, but feels Spa was a step too far. The four-time world champion pointed to his own incident with Verstappen, which saw the Dutch defending staunchly despite being about to pit.I think its right to criticise, I think its wrong to make too much of a story, Vettel said. I get along with him, I like him, hes aggressive and I think thats a strength for him, but certain movements especially under braking which I faced when I was racing with him I dont think are correct. Its probably something that needs to click and he needs to understand but in that race there was a lot going on, in the end it wasnt the smartest thing to do because I lost a lot of time, he lost a lot of time and he was about to pit. So arguably for his race whatever it was he lost three or four seconds just fighting with me which was unnecessary. I was clearly faster and got passed him anyway the lap after.Asked if he will raise the issue at the drivers briefing in Monza next weekend, Vettel replied: I will try and talk to Max, not now because I think he didnt have a good day, I didnt have a good day, Kimi didnt have a good day.But Im not a fan of penalising people, its not the way to educate, we need to talk to each other, we need to have respect. I think there has been a couple of manoeuvres that the rest of the field is not happy with his behaviour, as I said the best way to educate and the best way is just to talk rather than create a fuss in the media and try to talk via some other channels. We are men and its best to stand in front of each other and talk to each other. ' ' '

Haas boss Guenther Steiner says the team hopes to confirm its 2017 driver line-up this weekend during the Brazilian Grand Prix.Haas has delayed on announcing Romain Grosjeans teammate for next year, with uncertainty surrounding Esteban Gutierrezs future. This week various reports have said Renaults Kevin Magnussen has agreed to move to the American team.Though Steiner refused to comment on whether it is Magnussen or Gutierrez, he wants the deal to be wrapped up by the time the grid leaves Interlagos this weekend.Hopefully we will announce something this weekend, he said. There are still a few things things we need to talk to people about and then we will announce who our driver we will be.When asked the reasons for the delay, Steiner replied: Its just the little work when you get close to doing a deal. Its the same as like when you buy a car, in the end you want a free carpet or something new. We are in that stage at the moment. After a wildly inconsistent 2016 Steiner thinks Haas needs the right line-up next year to make a step forward. What you have to understand is that we are still a young team, the confidence in us... someone needs to understand that and want to be with us. We had a good start but then we dipped a little bit, weve got ups and downs, we need to sort them out. So not everyone wants to come but we wanted to speak and get the best we could get. Thats what you always want to do if you want to grow a team and we genuinely want to get better. This is the message we want to say to the racing world. There is more than one reason why you change driver, is it money? Is it you want to do better? There are so many reasons. Its not easy, were in quite a unique spot at the moment where some people want to come, some people dont want to come. It is fairly difficult to do it and thats why it took us longer than I thought it would. There was interest from people I would have thought, six months ago, would not have been interested. They all speak with you but they say thanks, but no thanks. There was quite a lot of interest and some talks went on, some stopped, and then new ones came in. I hope, as much as you guys, that we get it done as soon as possible because Im quite tired of the process and speaking about it. Id rather have it done.Gutierrez is yet to score a point this season -- a stark contrast to Grosjean, who currently has 29 alongside his name. Steiner refused to comment solely on Gutierrezs performances, however, saying instead the whole team wants to improve in 2017.You can always do better. I could do better, Im not happy with what we did. We had a fantastic start to the season and then had our dip. But with hindsight you can always do better. I want to leave it at that. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Indianas upset of Michigan State in overtime Saturday raised some eyebrows among college football pundits around the country, but it wasnt a huge stunner for Ohio State players who know the Hoosiers as a tough out the past few years.Indiana (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) overcame a 14-point Spartans lead in the final 16 minutes Saturday night, and won on a 20-yard field goal in overtime, 24-21. Indiana won its first overtime game in six years and got its second win in 26 tries over a ranked foe.The task this week will be more formidable for the Hoosiers when they travel to Columbus to play No. 2 Ohio State (4-0, 1-0).Last year the Buckeyes just snuck by Indiana 34-27, fumbling the ball four times and racking up 109 penalty yards. In 2014, the Buckeyes didnt manage to pull away until the third quarter in a 42-27 win.Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said Monday the Hoosiers have by far their best team this season.I see an outstanding team, Meyer said. For four years in a row its been a swing-as-hard-as-you-can (game)....Theyve got an excellent coaching staff, you can see some really good things on video tape, and their game Saturday was a great win for that program.Defensive end Sam Hubbard said Indianas victory over the defending Big Ten champs last week just adds to the intensity of Saturdays matchup. They almost beat us last year, so we didnt really expect it to be an easy game at all, Hubbard said, noting that Indiana could have the best offensive line the Buckeyes have faced this year. When I heard about it, I wasnt shocked by any means, said quarterback J.T. Barrett, who became the Ohio State career leader for touchdown passes Saturday. Indiana is not a team to look past because they give us trouble every year.DEFENSE MAKES THE DIFFERENCEA slow start in the Tulsa game notwithstanding, the Buckeyes have clicked early this season and havent run into any major potholes, in contrast to last season when they had trouble playing consistently until near the end. Meyer credits a deep, stifling defense with making the difference.Ohio State had another shut-down defensive performance on Saturday in the 58-0 dismantling of Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights were held to 116 total yards, 33 passing yards and nine first downs. Ohio State is third in the nation in total defense and is the only team not to have allowed a rushing touchdown.Thats just the way the game of football is -- if you have a great defense, things are usually going to get rolling for you at some point, even if you struggle a little bit, Meyer said. And the fact that you have J.T. Barrett running the show, its pretty smooth. Even when he makes a mistake, usually its not an awful one and we can rally right back up. But it starts with defense.WEBER ROLLING ALONGRunning back Mike Weber was named Big Ten freshman of the week after rushing for 144 yards on 14 carries against Rutgers, including a 46-yard breakaway for a touchdown. He also had a 49-year breakaway run. Weber, a redshirt freshman, leads the Big Ten with a 123.8-yards-per-game average. He ranks 11th nationally.LAST WORD ON RUTGERSTwelve Ohio State players caught passes from Barrett Saturday, and eight different players scored touchdowns. WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A former head basketball coach of a New York community college has been indicted on charges he used forged transcripts to help star players transfer to NCAA Division I colleges, prosecutors said Thursday.Tyrone Mushatt, who was arraigned on an 18-count indictment, abdicated his responsibility as a college coach and brazenly and methodically subverted the integrity of the college athletic system, said state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott.Several former basketball stars at Westchester Community College were ruled ineligible at other schools as a result of the scandal, which was uncovered in October 2014 by The Journal News. It prompted the college to cancel the past two mens seasons and the most recent womens season.Mushatt, a Bronx resident, altered the grades on some of his players transcripts between 2012 annd 2014, according to prosecutors.dddddddddddd They said the bogus transcripts were sent to seven colleges, including St. Johns, Quinnipiac and Florida A&M universities. No one else has been charged in the scandal. DENVER -- In the end,?Trevor Siemian didnt throw for 180 yards in his first NFL start, he did throw two interceptions, and it wasnt always a smooth ride on the learning curve. But the?24-year-old never lost his composure and showed why Broncos coach Gary Kubiak picked him as?Peyton Mannings replacement in a tense 21-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers?on Thursday night.Sure, theres butterflies every time you play, Siemian said. I think something is wrong with you if you dont. Im just super confident in the group of guys we have offensively. There are a lot of vets and a lot of great leadership in that group that I can lean on, and Im just really confident in those guys.Siemian, whose NFL résumé coming into the game had been just one regular-season play, a kneel-down against the Pittsburgh Steelers in December, finished 18-of-26 passing for 178 yards with a touchdown and the two interceptions. But Siemian was composed in big moments, putting together two touchdown drives in the second half as the Broncos became the first Super Bowl winner to trail by at least eight points in the next seasons opener before coming back for the win.The Broncos rushed for 148 yards in the game and had a close-to-even split in the play-calling with Siemians 26 pass attempts to go with their 29 rushing attempts.I thought Trevor handled his end of the bargain well, Kubiak said. The Broncos opened the game with an apparent case of nerves around their new quarterback. They had taken their opening drive to the Panthers 29-yard line when rookie Devontae Booker fumbled. Siemians first interception ended the Broncos second drive at the Panthers 25-yard line.On that play, Siemians throw was swatted by Panthers defensive tackle Star Lotulelei before being intercepted by linebacker Thomas Davis. The Panthers had a 17-7 lead at halftime, and Siemian was picked off again in the Broncos first possession in the third quarter when, in the face of a blitz, he couldnt step into the throw.Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders was open inside the Panthers 10-yard line, but the pass was underthrown and intercepted by Panthers cornerback Bene Benwikere.Kubiak said Siemian was never rattled after all of that.Nah, he wasnt, Kubiak said. And actually the second interception, it really wasnt his fault ... and in fairness to the kid we should have picked [the blitz] up and he should have been able to step and throw. We didnt get that done.Siemian then showed what likely won him the job in the first place, at least in addition to a power arm. Its his composure and ability to rebound from trouble. After his second interception and a rather ugly three-and-out, Siemian led two touchdown drives. The first of those scores came when Siemian stared down the Panthers pressure and tossed a screen pass to running back C.J. Anderson, who?took it 25 yards for a score that made it 17-14.There was pressure, and I knew I had to get it to C.J., somehow, some way, and it would be a big play, Siemian said. He made a couple moves, had a heck of a run and got it in there. ... I knew it was a big play if I could get it to him. Somehow, some way, get it to C.J. and hell take care of it.Said Kubiak: That was a great job. ... But Trevor really did an amazing job of pulling the rush in and getting the ball off ... just really good by kind of handling the situation.Anderson scored on a 1-yard run to close out the Broncos next possession and put Denver in position for the comeback win.Weve got a resilient team, and you saw that tonight, Siemian said. NEW YORK -- For the first time, every single NFL game will be streamed live this season. But watching them all wont be easy.In general, its great that the NFL and its television networks are finally taking this step. Last year, most games televised on CBS werent streamed at all.Things are much simpler this season: All games will be streamed live, regardless of the network. But its still tricky to figure out where to find them online, and in many cases youll need pricey cable or satellite TV subscriptions to actually watch them.Heres a stream-by-stream guide to catching all the online pigskin you can.---NETWORK STREAMSIn general, Sunday afternoon games air on CBS and Fox. Sunday night games air on NBC. These games are free if you catch them on TV with an antenna, but to watch any of the networks online, youll need to pony up and get a cable or satellite TV subscription. Even then, youll be limited to hometown-team games plus a few other contests your local station broadcasts. If you want more games, youll need a DirecTV Sunday Ticket subscription.CBS made a few online games available for free last season and might do so again this year, but most of its games will also require a cable or satellite subscription. The $6-a-month CBS All Access online service isnt true to its name in this case; it wont get you the games.Meanwhile, ESPN owns Mondays, while the NFL Network cable channel televises all Thursday games. You can watch online if youre already paying for a TV package that carries these channels. But some of the Thursday games will end up on CBS or NBC as well -- but to stream those games for free, without a TV package, you need to go to Twitter instead (see below). The NFL Network is also getting a few weekend games , but not Thursday nights season opener or anything over the Thanksgiving holiday. To complicate things even more, most network streams are disabled on phones because of a deal the NFL has with Verizon. If youre a Verizon customer, you can watch for free on the NFL Mobile app or through Verizons go90 service. If not, grab a tablet or a PC, or watch on the big screen with a streaming-TV device like Roku or Apple TV.---TWITTERTwitter will stream 10 Thursday night games live without any device restrictions or sign-in requirements. These are the same games available on either CBS and NBC, not the ones exclusive to the NFL Network. Twitter is expected to provide more details on how to watch closer to the first game on Sept. 15.---PLAYSTATION VUESonys online TV service carries all five networks that show NFL games, but only in a handful of markets. Elsewhere, youll be lucky to find even a few of the broadcast networks on Vue. The service costs $35 or $45 a month with the NFL Network, or $30 or $40 without. The higher price applies to seven markets where Vue offers the best selection of broadcast networks.ddddddddddddRegardless of the market, an additional $40 for the season gets you the NFL RedZone, a channel that switches from game to game to show key plays and scoring. You need a PlayStation or Amazon Fire TV device to sign up. Some games might be available on other devices once you sign up, but none are on phones unless its a game thats exclusive to the NFL Network.---SLING TVThis online TV service from satellite provider Dish offers Fox, NBC, ESPN and NFL Network for $40 a month. (You can cut the bill in half by opting for fewer channels.) But youll only find Fox and NBC in a handful of markets where the local stations are owned by the networks themselves. The NFL RedZone channel costs $5 a month more. CBS isnt on Sling at all.Games are available on a variety of PCs, tablets and streaming-TV devices. Games exclusive to the NFL Network will stream on phones, too.---NFL SUNDAY TICKETThis service from satellite provider DirecTV gives you Sunday afternoon games you cant get on your local TV station, so it typically excludes hometown teams. Its intended for DirecTV subscribers who pay an extra fee, although its sometimes possible to just buy the online package, which costs $200 for the season. To qualify, you need to show that you cant get the regular DirecTV service. For example, you might live
CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs go for a four-game sweep of Milwaukee on Thursday as they send their ace right-hander against a rising Brewers star.A revived Jake Arrieta (14-5, 2.55 ERA) seeks his third consecutive win since shaking out of a three-loss slump. He will oppose Milwaukee right-hander Zach Davies (9-5, 3.80 ERA).Arrietas focus remains on the big picture as the Cubs set their sights on the National League Central title and a lengthy postseason run.We know what were capable of, Arrieta said following his last victory, a 13-2 decision over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Regardless of how many games you win the division by ... once you get to October, the slates clean. Thats the focus. The Cubs (76-43) enter Thursday with a 12 1/2-game lead over second-place St. Louis, the defending division champ, and 13 1/2 games over the Pittsburgh Pirates.Arrieta faced the Brewers once this season, throwing five innings of one-run ball in a 7-2 victory at Wrigley Field on April 28. For his career against Milwaukee, he is 5-3 with a 2.31 ERA in 10 starts.Arrietas rebound comes at a time when the whole starting staff is performing well.Cubs starters have allowed two or fewer runs in 12 consecutive games, the longest single-season streak in team history. The rotation owns a 1.11 ERA in that stretch, and it is 11-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 15 games this month.Milwaukee, meanwhile, hopes to break out of a three-game losing streak in the series finale behind Davies.Davies, in his second big league season, has been the bright spot in the Brewers rotation. He is the lone current starter with a winning record as he makes his 22nd start of the season and second against Chicago. The 23-year-old beat the Cubs on July 23 at Miller Park, allowing one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings.Since going 0-3 in his first three starts, Davies is 9-2 over his past 19 appearances, and he has 11 quality starts for the year. He is 2-0 all-time against the Cubs. When he gets into a groove, he runs through the lineup pretty good, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said recently.Davies is coming off a loss to Cincinnati on Saturday, when he allowed five runs on eight hits in five-plus innings during the Brewers 11-5 defeat. The Chicago club Davies opposes will have some different faces from the one he saw last month, as the Cubs made a series of roster moves Wednesday. They placed outfielder Chris Coghlan (right rib contusion) and right-handed pitcher Joe Smith (left hamstring strain) on the 15-day disabled list. The Cubs also called up right-hander Spencer Patton from Triple-A Iowa. Patton was 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA in nine relief appearances for Chicago earlier this season. He shined with Iowa, recording 11 saves and a 1-0 record with a 0.77 ERA in 34 relief outings.Trevor Cahill, activated from the disabled list to serve as the Cubs 26th man for the Tuesday doubleheader, remained on the roster in one of the vacancies created Wednesday. He worked five scoreless innings during a 4-0 victory over the Brewers (52-67) in Game 1 of the doubleheader.Chicago won the nightcap 4-1, then cruised to a 6-1 victory Wednesday. The Cubs also likely will be without right-hander John Lackey for their weekend series at Colorado. Lackey experienced shoulder tightness in his last start against the Cardinals, so left-hander Mike Montgomery is scheduled to pitch on Saturday in Lackeys place. Cheap Nashville Predators Jerseys . BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics took their defense from solid in the first half to stifling in the second.Isaiah Thomas scored 16 of his 26 points after halftime and Al Horford had 18 points and five blocked shots as Boston beat the Charlotte Hornets 96-88 on Friday night to stop a three-game slide.Coach just told us we needed to step up our level of energy a little more on the defensive end, Horford said. We did that and that was the big difference.Getting Thomas back after he missed four straight games with a groin strain didnt hurt, either.Thomas scored nine in the third quarter as the Celtics fought back from a 12-point deficit. He added seven in the fourth to help Boston put away the Hornets. We got stops and got running, Thomas said. The one thing we did in the fourth quarter is we just spaced the floor and made plays for each other. Guys hit big shots.Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder added 12 points apiece for the Celtics, who held the Hornets to 13 field goals in the second half.Charlotte played without leading scorer Kemba Walker, who did not travel with the team due to personal reasons, and lost its fourth straight.Although the Hornets outrebounded Boston 54-46, the Celtics outscored them 38-30 in the paint as Charlotte had trouble converting inside. We have to finish some of these plays, coach Steve Clifford said. You get these point-blank ones and you dont have the floor balance in there back the other way. There were two or three of those that were huge plays.Nicolas Batum led the Hornets with 22 points and 10 rebounds.Ramon Sessions had 13 points and six assists, Marco Belinelli scored 11 and Jeremy Lamb added 10 points for the Hornets.Crowder hit a 3 with 6:11 left to put Boston up 80-79 after Charlotte scored seven straight points. Thomas drew a flagrant foul by Belinelli and hit both free throws. Boston retained possession because of the flagrant, and Crowder drew another foul and added two more free throws to put Boston ahead 84-79.Cody Zeller missed from inside for Charlotte, and Thomas came back with a 3-pointer to make it 87-79 with 4:52 left. Charlotte turned it over right awaay after the inbounds play and Bradley added another 3 that gave Boston a 90-79 cushion with 4:24 to go.ddddddddddddAfter a basket by Belinelli with 6:32 left completed their 7-0 run, the Hornets went scoreless until his layup with 2:20 remaining cut it to 92-81.Boston held Charlotte to five field goals in the third quarter, when the Hornets were 5 of 23.Charlotte closed the second on a 14-4 run and took a 50-41 lead into halftime. The Hornets led 60-48 early in the third when the Celtics started their surge. Kelly Olynyk hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 62 with 3:57 left, and it was tied 69-all at the end of the third.MISSING KEMBASessions started for Walker and had six assists, but the Hornets offense appeared lost without Walker.Hes one of the best in the league, so we missed him a lot tonight, Batum said. We played better tonight overall. But we should have won that game, anyway. No excuses.COLD OUTSIDEAfter shooting 2 of 14 from beyond the arc in the first half, the Celtics started hitting from outside in the third period. They went 7 of 14 on 3-pointers in the second half and held Charlotte to 19 points in each of the final two quarters.WELCOME BACKThomas hadnt played since scoring 20 points against Houston on Dec. 5. The Celtics went 1/3 in the games he missed and were happy to have him leading the offense once again. It helps all of us just because it opens the floor even more. Teams have to play us a little more honest, said Horford, who also had eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Its just good to have him back.TIP-INSHornets: Walker is averaging 22.6 points per game. He missed his first game this season, but was expected to return when the Hornets visit Atlanta on Saturday night. Walkers absence made Belinelli and Sessions the only Charlotte players to appear in all 27 games this season.Celtics: Jonas Jerebko scored nine points to lead Bostons reserves.UP NEXTHornets: At the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night.Celtics: At the Miami Heat on Sunday night. Trinbago Knight Riders 138 for 2 (Ramdin 52*, McCullum 43*, Louis 1-25) beat St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 137 for 6 (Simmons 60*, Bravo 4-13, Narine 1-9) by eight wicketsScorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDwayne Bravo ensured the Champion dance phenomenon made its way through south Florida on Sunday afternoon, taking four wickets to set up a resounding eight-wicket win for Trinbago Knight Riders over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in Lauderhill. The Knight Riders captain bowled a stifling spell early on, striking twice in his first over, and finished with figures of 4-0-13-4 to restrict Patriots to 137 for 6, a total chased down with three overs to spare.Bravo removed Evin Lewis at gully and yorked Faf du Plessis in the fourth over, before returning at the end to bowl Shamarh Brooks and take a skier off his own bowling to get Devon Thomas and not allow Patriots to put up a stiff target.Kieran Powell got Patriots off to an aggressive start, making 23 off 17 balls with an array of classy shots over the off side but Bravo made inroads at the opposite end to pull Knight Riders back in the Powerplay. Anton Devcich, who opened with spin opposite Bravo, then took an athletic one-handed return catch from a blitzing Powell drive to make it 25 for 3 in the fifth over and from there Patriots struggled to rebuild.Sunil Narine kept the pressure on, getting Jonathan Carter stumped with the batsman dragging his foot fractionally out of the crease missing a slog, in a wicket-maiden 12th. Narine conceded only nine runs in his four overs but could not remove Lendl Simmons, who finished unbeaten on 60 but received little support.Hashim Amla fell cheaply at the start of the chase but fellow opener William Perkins put on 58 for the second wicket with Denesh Ramdin before falling at the end of the eighth over. Brendon McCullums horrid run in this seasons CPL showed signs of turning around as he struck three sixes in his unbeaten 43 off 28 balls, including a clean strike over the hill on the north side of the ground. Ramdin top-scored with 52 not out and hit the winning single through cover. Knight Riders now await St Lucia Zouks in a playoff eliminator on August 4 in St Kitts. Cheap Air Max 95 Free Shipping . Gonzaga will attempt to start 10-0 for the first time since joining the Division I level in 1958-59 when the eighth-ranked Bulldogs host Akron in a non-conference game Saturday.Although Gonzaga is unbeaten and ranked in the top 10, coach Mark Few believes the Bulldogs are far from where he wants them to be. Akron (7-2) is a solid mid-major program that will provide a good barometer for how Gonzaga is progressing after Wednesdays 98-71 win over visiting intrastate rival Washington.A 27-point win should satisfy Few, but he stressed to his team the discrepancy in rebounds, with Washington grabbing 29 offensive boards and out-rebounding the Bulldogs 54-42 overall. That happened despite Gonzaga being known for its frontcourt presence with 7-foot-1 center Przemek Karnowski, 7-0 forward Zach Collins, 6-10 Killian Tillie and 6-9 Johnathan Williams. What I like is I think theres room for growth, Few said. I didnt think the young bigs (freshmen Collins and Tillie) played like they normally have so theres a teaching opportunity there. We didnt quite rebound the way we expect to around here.Collins had only five rebounds in 17 minutes while Tillie mustered one in 15 minutes against the Huskies. Gonzaga outrebounds opponents by 4.6 per game but has been outrebounded by 20 in the last two games against Arizona and Washington.Akron has three players who average at least 5.1 rebounds, led by 6-10 senior forward Kwen Cheatham Jr., who averages 7.0 per game. Isaiah Johnson, a 6-10 senior post player, averages 5.8.Cheatham pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in the Zips 87-63 win over visiting Coppin State on Wednesday. Akron won the rebounding battle 40-24 in that game while pulling down 11 on the offensive end.Akron coach Keith Dambrot is the reigning Mid-American Conference coach of the year after guiding his alma mater to a 26-9 record. Before his team was defeated by Gonzaga 77-64 in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, he labeled his program Gonzaga 2009 -- believing it was the next mid-major to establish itself as a power. The Zips, who lost 82-70 at No. 10 Creighton last week, have anotherr opportunity to prove their worth on the road against a highly ranked opponent.dddddddddddd Dambrot is trying to not put as much hype into it as he did going into the NCAA Tournament game against the Bulldogs eight seasons ago.We have to play the same every night regardless of who we play, Dambrot said. We have to play with the same emotion and care about every play every day. If we do that, well get better as a team.If we get better as a team, we can make a turn at this thing.Adversely affecting Akron in its upset bid is the questionable status of junior point guard Noah Robotham, who has missed the last two games with an ankle sprain and is averaging 10.1 points.Robotham played against Gonzaga junior point guard Nigel Williams-Goss when they prepped in Las Vegas -- Robotham with Bishop Gorman High School and Williams-Goss with Findlay Prep. Williams-Goss is coming off a 23-point performance against his former school, Washington, which increased his team-leading scoring average to 13.7.Both Akron and Gonzaga are known for their ability to score. The Zips are averaging 79.8 points per game with Johnson averaging a team-best 15.2 points while shooting 70.3 percent from the field. The matchup between Johnson and Karnowski (averaging 12.2 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds) will be one to watch.Balance is the key for the Bulldogs, who averaging 85.9 points and feature six players averaging at least 9.7 points and four with more than five rebounds per contest. Were built inside-out, but yet our perimeters can really shoot it, Few said of his teams versatility, most notably senior guard Josh Perkins, who shoots 52.5 percent from 3-point range but also is a playmaker evidenced by his five assists against Washington.Perkins did a great job. He managed the game, just took what they gave him and spread it around, fed the bigs, found the guards for toed-up threes and did a great job of taking care of the basketball (one turnover in 30 minutes against the Huskies). MUNICH, Germany -- Ernie Els took the lead in the first round of the BMW International Open on Thursday after an eagle and seven birdies steered him to a 9-under 63. The South African, who won the British Open in 2002 and 2012 and the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1997, almost had a second eagle at the last that would have equaled a course record. Still, he was content with a two-putt birdie that gave him a one-stroke lead. "It doesnt really mean much until Sunday. But getting into the race, so to speak, early on in the tournament is nice, to be right in the hunt," Els said. Matthew Baldwin of England, Swedens Alex Noren, Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen and Germanys Martin Kaymer, who delighted the home crowd in the afternoon by finishing with three successive birdies, and nine in all, have a share of second place after carding 64s. "I had a lot of chances on the back nine and I pretty much made all of them," said Kaymer, who won this tournament in 2008. Baldwin and Noren both had eight birdies in the morning, while Derksen had six, as well as an eagle in the afternoon. English pair Matthew Nixon and Tom Lewis, along with Alexander Levy of France, are tied for sixth, one stroke further back. "Hats off, it was just everything went right, holed a lot of putts and thats that, really," Nixon said. "I had two eagles and my dad is always telling me Im rubbish at par-5s so hopefully hell feel better about that." Els finished tied for fourth at the U.S. Open last week and had a share of sixth place at the Wentworth Club in his previous two tournaments. "Ive really been working hard at my game," the 43-year-old said. "I could feel that things were coming around a bit. Ive had a bit of an iffy year up to now, but I really feel that my swing feels good and my body feels good, so I can swing the club properly." Els started at the 10th, and fired five birdies in the outward 31. He holed a 40-foot birdie putt on the short second, before doing brilliantly on the par-five sixth. Despite finding himself in the rough facing a flag guarded by water, he drove the ball almost 250 yards to within five feet of the hole, before putting for the eagle. "Its just a pleasure to play, not to go through a torture chamber like I did at the U.S. Open. So, a nice start," Els said. American Dustin Johnson was among a group of 10 to finish with 6-under 66s, including South Africas Brandon Stone on his professional debut. "I drove it well, hit it well. I holed a couple putts but I missed quite a few short ones," said Johnson, who managed six birdies. "Im happy with where Im at right now and Im looking forward to coming back in the morning and playing better." Authentic Greg Maddux Jersey . Surrey 299 for 7 (Roy 120, Onions 4-68) trail Durham 401 (Jennings 201*, Footitt 5-90) by 102 runsScorecard A plucky century by Jason Roy helped Surrey to 299 for 7 in reply to Durhams 401 in the Specsavers County Championship match at Chester-le-Street.In spending 103 balls over his first 50, the England one-day batsman either missed it or middled it. But his second 50 required only 41 balls, with most of his last 20 runs being easy pickings off future team-mate Scott Borthwick. He sat back to clobber a short ball from the legspinner between mid-off and extra cover to reach three figures with his 14th four. But after sharing a third-wicket stand of 164 with Zafar Ansari four wickets went down for 24 runs.Ansari went for a very solid 48 when he edged a drive at Keaton Jennings to slip, then Mark Wood struck with his second delivery with the new ball and Graham Onions with his first.Ben Foakes was lbw when he walked across, looking to turn Wood to leg, and Roy went for 120 when Onions skidded one through to knock him off his feet and claim another lbw verdict.Onions produced another beauty four overs later to claim his fourth wicket, beating Tom Currans forward push to trim his off bail.Durham were twice convinced they had Roy caught behind, but his edges tended to be of the thicker variety, one flying wide of gully when looking to turn the impressive Brydon Carse to leg.He hit Paul Colliingwoods first ball just out of short extra covers reach, and on 42 Onions had him in all kinds of trouble.ddddddddddddA ball which Roy played into the ground lobbed up and dropped just over the stumps, then he was beaten twice in the same over.Onions also took two wickets in four balls shortly after lunch. He beat Dominic Sibleys forward push on 31 to nick the off stump then nipped one back to have Kumar Sangakkara lbw for 48. In the morning Jennings was left stranded on 201, becoming the seventh player to carry his bat through a Durham innings.Although the fifth batting point was achieved when last man Onions scored the days first seven runs, he then drove a catch to cover to give Mark Footitt his fifth wicket. The only Surrey batsman to fall before lunch was Rory Burns, who was given an uncomfortable time by Wood and fell for 15 when an in-swinger took the inside edge on the way to wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter.Faced with an attack of Wood, Onions, Ben Stokes and the pacy Carse, Sibley played well enough to suggest he wont be the one making way for Mark Stoneman, or Borthwick.Carse, back after a three-month injury absence, posed the greatest threat. He beat Sangakkara twice in his first two overs and remained out of luck as he and Stokes emerged wicketless. ' ' '
MINNEAPOLIS -- Tom Thibodeau, king of solitary marathon film sessions, got lonely. It happened throughout the past year as he moved around the country, trying to take advantage of a paid year away from the NBA. In all, he spent time with 13 NBA teams, watching practices, having lunches with coaches, watching games and, of course, going through security checks and riding shuttle buses.I didnt like traveling alone, Thibodeau said. It got to me. I dont know how people do it.The Minnesota Timberwolves hired Thibodeau because of his strong history of teaching defense and his demonstrated ability to squeeze everything out of his Chicago Bulls teams from 2010-15. But owner Glen Taylor, who gave him a five-year, $40 million deal to also oversee the teams basketball operations, might be getting a coach who is slightly different from the one the NBA last saw.Thibodeau kept telling people he viewed last year as a sabbatical. That meant more than rest, it also meant training. In all that time alone, Thibodeau did a lot of thinking and considering. Whether it will lead to real changes is to be seen.Thibodeaus methods were often branded as old school, even though he repeatedly showed his defensive principles were designed to slow modern offenses. When it came to playing time and the 3-point shot, well, he wasnt as progressive. But there are already signs he is trying to modernize his approach in his first days working with one of the leagues most promising young rosters. As an example, Thibodeau for the first time has hired a shooting coach -- Peter Patton, who was schooled by San Antonio Spurs shooting coach Chip Engelland -- because as he went around the league he noted many teams were adding the position. Patton wont just work with the Wolves players, he will consult the front office in looking at player acquisitions and draft preparation. Again, thats progressive. When examining how the Wolves can break their 12-year playoff drought, Thibodeau immediately pointed to the 3-point line. The Wolves finished 29th in 3-point attempts and makes last season. We gave up nine [3-pointers] a game, and we made only five and a half, Thibodeau said. Thats like starting the game 10 points behind.Thibodeaus Bulls teams werent 3-point heavy. They were 28th in attempts in 2013-14 and 29th in 2012-13, though in his final season, they improved to 16th. Some of that, of course, was due to personnel. But his focus on it now is part of the old-fashioned coachs attempts to evolve. Were a work in progress, Thibodeau said, perhaps even talking a little about himself. Weve got to close the gap.Thibodeau has been using that line a lot in the first days of the season, sometimes reaching his arms out and making a symbolic squeezing motion. The team had plenty of salary-cap space this summer, and some speculated theyd get deep into the bidding on former Bull Luol Deng. But instead of using a large block to chase a veteran starter, they signed a range of reserve players, including?Cole Aldrich, Jordan Hill and Brandon Rush. Thibodeau also signed veterans John Lucas III and Rasual Butler, both of whom played for him with the Bulls, to help the transition for younger players and to teach his systems. The Wolves left $10 million in cap space unused, and two of their highest-paid players, Kevin Garnett and Nikola Pekovic, wont be playing for the team this season. Its a young, relatively cheap and deep roster, albeit still largely unproven. In theory, at least, all the bodies should reduce Thibodeaus famous dependence on riding his front-line players for major minutes, which some believed led to the Bulls rash of injuries. Long-term rest techniques and injury-prevention methods were other league trends Thibodeau observed, notably in his time around the Golden State Warriors and their strength in numbers vision.I liked the core of the team. I want to get to know them better, he said. Im going to focus on the players we have. That gives me a better idea of what our needs are.The Wolves finished last season ranked 27th in defensive rating, a woeful number that Thibodeau certainly has the expertise to improve. They did win four of their last five games, including a bit of a magical West Coast trip in which they won at Golden State and Portland in the same week. Still, it added up to just 29 wins, another losing season. We have the talent, and we have the length to be better on defense, but we didnt always have the discipline, Karl-Anthony Towns said. Im willing to say I dont know. I want to learn.Towns said he thought Thibodeaus defensive system was similar to what he ran at the University of Kentucky, and he was encouraged that hed learn quickly. When this was mentioned to Thibodeau, he just grunted with a half-smile. Towns and the Wolves havent seen anything yet.Thibodeau didnt need a league-wide tour to learn how to teach defense. Looking at the way the Wolves have set up their preseason schedule makes it clear who is in charge now and what his goal is. Thibodeau essentially designed three training camps. Though technically voluntary, every Wolves player was doing full workouts for 2-3 weeks before the beginning of actual training camp. According to players, these were de facto practices. Its a clinic every day, guard Ricky Rubio said. Theres an intensity in practice. Hes tough but in a good way. Then Thibodeau scheduled 11 days between the start of official practice and his first preseason game. Some teams had as little as four days of practice before the preseason opener. In a way, that is the second training camp. The third is an unusual nine-day preseason road trip that will take the Wolves to five cities, including stops in Kansas City, Missouri; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Louisville, Kentucky. This will enable a long bonding session, much of it in non-NBA cities, that will mimic an offsite training camp.In this time, Thibodeau, as one would expect, is drilling his players on defensive techniques. He didnt say it, but his actions make it clear he was appalled at the Wolves defensive habits last season. More than half of the early workouts were focused on defense. There were film sessions focusing on positioning. There were drills intended to create habits. We have to get an understanding of it. We cant rest, Thibodeau said before starting a checklist. We have to be a talk [on defense] team, we have to be challenging shots, we have to learn to finish defense correctly.Thibodeau gave the impression that theres a long way to go for the Wolves, even if his players talk positively about their improvement. Hes also paying a lot of attention to Andrew Wiggins, who two seasons ago was the leagues rookie of the year. In many ways, Wiggins holds the key for the long-range upside of the Wolves. Towns, last seasons ROY, has the look of a budding All-Star, perhaps the most exciting young player in the league. Young wing Zach LaVine quietly had an outstanding second half last season, especially shooting from long range. Theres a lot of excitement over rookie point guard Kris Dunn, who had a promising summer league. But the team needs Wiggins to grow into his potential, to be heading into the conversation for All-Star and All-NBA teams starting now. Going into his third season, this is the time when he should be taking large leaps forward. Thibodeau is spending extra time with him, watching him work on individual drills after practice and giving special instruction.Theres significant excitement around the team, the idea that Thibodeaus arrival combined with natural maturation of young players could truly create the roots of a serious team. Combined with a new practice facility and a renovated Target Center, there is a feeling of rebirth. Thibodeau, of course, is more focused on the work than anything else. Its like building a house, Thibodeau said. Were still working on the foundation. Kevin Gausman Jersey . CHESTNUT Hill, Mass. -- Louisville?used the No. 7 ranking it received from the College Football Playoff committee earlier this week as extra motivation Saturday against Boston College and piled up the points in a 52-7 win as a way to make a statement.?Coach Bobby Petrino isnt happy with the idea that his team must blow out its final three opponents to make a better impression on the committee.I guess we do, Petrino said. Its sad because theres something called sportsmanship, but maybe I made a mistake. Maybe looking back at it, in Florida State [a 63-20 win Sept. 17], we should have kept all the starters in and scored 80 points and did that. But I dont understand why its like that. I really dont. And then you look at Clemson and the schedule they beat, the guys in the top 10 that they beat, and what Alabama has done, why isnt Clemson rated No. 1 [in the CFP]?Committee member Kirby Hocutt, in an interview with College Football Live on ESPN Radio, didnt agree with Petrinos reasoning. As weve said as a selection committee before, we do not incent margin of victory. We look at performance on the field, but we do not incent the margin of victory. We do not talk about that in our committee room, Hocutt said. Louisville is a very strong team, very impressive win against Florida State earlier this season. They continue to win. Their schedule, as we talked about it last week, was just not as strong as others that they were being compared against up to this point of time in the season.Obviously, they had a very good win today against Boston College, and Im sure our committee will look forward to getting back together and having some great conversation and doing a deeper dive into all these teams yet again this week, with another game of the regular season in front of us.Texas A&M lost to Mississippi State on Saturday, so Louisville will move up at least one spot when the next CFP rankings are unveiled Tuesday. The committee had said the Cardinals were put behind one-loss Texas A&M and one-loss Ohio State in the initial rankings because they had a weaker schedule and needed a last-minute touchdown to beat Virginia (2-6) the previous week. Now Petrino wants to know why strength of schedule is being held against his team but not helping the Tigers, who are ranked No. 2 behind Alabama. Louisvilles only loss this season came in the final minute against Clemson 42-36.When asked whether there are six teams better than his, Petrino said, I dont think so, but heck, what do I know? I know we played well today, and I really like our football team. I think they come to work and practice with a great attitude, and we really are a team. We rely on each other, and we take care of each other, so thats something that is fun for me as a coach is to just see how good a team we are and how much these guys love each other. IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Kirk Ferentz has mentioned more than once in his 18 seasons as Iowas coach that his program doesnt have much margin for error.Last weeks stunning loss to North Dakota State showed that it wasnt just coach speak. The Hawkeyes (2-1) went unbeaten in the regular season in 2015 largely because they always seemed to do the little things well. A team like Iowa, which prides itself on taking undervalued recruits and turning them into smart, focused and disciplined starters, cant afford to be sloppy and hope to win.Never was that more apparent than against the Bison.Iowa lost two starting offensive linemen to injuries and suddenly couldnt run the ball.Penalties, dropped passes and errant throws allowed the five-time defending FCS champions to hang around. A crucial late sack -on a blitz that quarterback C.J. Beathard said his line shouldve picked up -- helped the Bison get the ball back with just enough time to steal a victory. It wasnt like we came out and we werent focused or we werent ready to go. Because I think we were, Iowa defensive end Parker Hesse said. Just momentary lapses in our attention to detail...got to us.Iowa will likely soon get some help in that regard, as both guard Sean Welsh and center James Daniels -- two of its best linemen -- are expected back for Saturdays game at Rutgers (2-1).But the Hawkeyes believe it wont matter much unless they get back to the focus that made them so tough to beat a year ago.We need to rally around each other and get what we had last year going, offensive lineman Ike Boettger said.To be fair, a lot of Power Five teams might have suffered a similar fate against the Bison, which has a host of FBS-level players whhove come to expect to win against any team.ddddddddddddIowa has some really good players, too.But many of them simply didnt play well last weekend.Quarterback C.J. Beathard was uncharacteristically off, missing more than a few open receivers. Drops hurt Beathard as well, including one in the open field by Akrum Wadley -- whose long TD reception on Sept. 10 helped fuel a rout of Iowa State.George Kittle, who has developed a reputation as one of the nations top blocking tight ends, was called for a hold on the first play of the second half. The penalty negated a 62-yard run that left Iowa just three yards from a touchdown that wouldve put it ahead 21-7.Beathard said Iowas offense committed 17 of what the coaching staff calls mental mistakes last week after combining for just 10 in the first two games. The bottom line is, we didnt play clean football, Ferentz said. The most glaring thing in my mind was just not dealing well with the makeable (plays)...which to me are plays that should be able to execute without having a superstar-type player. The Hawkeyes can forget about the playoffs for now. The Big Ten West remains as open as ever though, and Iowa remains among the favorites. That will change if the Hawkeyes keep playing like they did a week ago.Everything was correctable on the field. Its just whether or not you want to...be more ready for the game. Some people just have to put more time into it maybe, and watch more film and be able to understand what the offense is running, linebacker Josey Jewell said.---Online: www.collegefootball.ap.org .
