NICOSIA， Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The European Council will vote for the European Union to be present at an international conference called to conclude an agreement to reunify Cyprus， state television reported here on Friday.
The issue of the participation of the European Union in the conference came up during talks between Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and French President Francoise Hollande.
The French president paid a short work visit to Cyprus on Friday night， after visiting the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle operating in the eastern Mediterranean against the Islamic State (IS).
Hollande said that the European Union must be present to offer its support to the process， adding Anastasiades will raise the issue for a decision to be taken by the European Council in Brussels.
"We are here because we want to offer our support to the negotiations as a UN Security Council member. The European Union must also be present at the conference，" Hollande said addressing journalists jointly with Anastasiades.
Cypriot state television， also quoting diplomatic sources， said Germany had independently asked to be present at the Geneva conference.
The conference was convened to discuss security arrangements and the changing of guarantee rights accorded to Britain， Greece and Turkey under the 1960 treaties establishing the Cyprus Republic as an independent state after the end of British colonial rule.
Turkey， which occupied about 37 percent of Cypriot territory during a military intervention in 1974 in response to a coup engineered by then military rulers of Greece， is reported to be strongly opposed to giving up its guarantee rights and withdrawing all its troops from Cyprus， numbering about 43，000 soldiers.
Hollande said the cooperation between France and Cyprus will be strengthened with the signing of a defense agreement in the next few months.
Cyprus is already providing military facilities to France in support of its operations against the IS in Syria and Iraq.
