KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs are rallying around long snapper James Winchester, whose father Michael was killed by a former Southwest Airlines employee outside an Oklahoma City airport.Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that Winchester, who like his father played college football at Oklahoma, had returned to the state to be with his family. Reid was not certain whether the younger Winchester would be back for Sundays game against Tampa Bay.Tragic incident. Sick, to be honest with you, Reid said Wednesday morning, one day after the shooting took place. Hes where he needs to be, and when he comes back, he comes back. But right now is his time to be with his family. Our hearts and prayer go out to him.Oklahoma City police said Michael Winchester was leaving work for the day Tuesday when he was shot to death near an employee parking lot. The attack appeared to be in retaliation for circumstances that led to the gunman, Lloyd Dean Buie, leaving his job with the airline last year. Buie was later found dead in his pickup truck. Its not something you ever expect to happen or think will happen in your wildest dreams, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith said. I think everybody is feeling for James and his family. Just a very, very crazy thing, to see it out there on media and things like that.Smith called the locker room a special place where the younger Winchester will be welcomed back with open arms. Many current Chiefs have dealt with other tragedies over the years, notably the murder-suicide of linebacker Jovan Belcher that took place just outside the practice facility in December 2012.James is such a caring teammate, thoughtful teammate, a guy that would sacrifice for his team, Smith said, so youre feeling for him. You dont always know what to do or say, but you just try to be there for him as you work through this. Its hard.Michael Winchester was a punter on the Sooners 1985 national championship team, and his son followed in his footsteps by playing in Norman. His sister, Carolyn, played on the womens basketball team and another sister, Rebecca, was a rower for the Sooners.James Winchester earned the long snapper job in Kansas City last season, and fought off a challenge for it in training camp. If he does not return by Sunday, tight end Travis Kelce or fullback Anthony Sherman would handle his duties against the Buccaneers. You have to give him privacy, but were here, said Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt, who spends more time with Winchester than any other player, and who has spoken to him since the shooting.Hes in a good place right now. Theres forgiveness in his breath, Colquitt said. Hes a great teammate, a great guy and hell be ready to roll. He just has to take care of business right now.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFLDiscount Nike SB Shoes . -- Devin Hester is done returning kicks in Chicago. TAMPA, Fla. -- Mike Evans has reversed course on his decision to protest the national anthem as long as Donald Trump is president-elect and will stand with his Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammates, opting to find what he calls more effective ways to communicate his message. In a statement released Tuesday to ESPNs Josina Anderson and the Tampa Bay Times, Evans apologized to the military and anyone else offended by his actions Sunday, when he sat during the national anthem before the Buccaneers game against the Chicago Bears.I want to start by apologizing to all the U.S. military members, their families, and the fans who I offended by my actions on Sunday, Evans said in the statement. It was never my intention as I have tremendous respect for the men and women who serve our country.I have very strong emotions regarding some of the many issues that exist in our society today. I chose to sit as an expression of my frustration towards this years election. It was very personal for me, as it was for so many Americans. With that being said, I will not sit again during the National Anthem because I want to focus my efforts on finding more effective ways to communicate my message and bring about change by supporting organizations and movements that fight for equal rights for minorities. This Sunday, I wwill be back to standing with my teammates.ddddddddddddsked to clarify Evans definition of the word minorities, the receivers agent, Deryk Gilmore, said it includes people of color, women, LGBT ...?Evans protested the anthem during the Bucs annual Salute to Service game that honors active-duty and reserve military, retired and veteran service members. The star wide receiver also posted in an Instagram comment last week that he did not vote in the Nov. 8 presidential election.Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter said Monday that he was disappointed with Evans decision to sit because of what the anthem stands for.Yeah, Im disappointed for that, said Koetter, who has had his team practice lining up for the national anthem before. I also respect Mikes freedom of speech and freedom of expression.Evans previously has said that he meant no disrespect to the military. Tampa is home to MacDill Air Force Base and 12,000 active service members.I dont want to disrespect the veterans or anything, Evans said Sunday. The men and women that served this country -- Im forever indebted to them. But the things that have been going on in America lately, Im not going to stand for that.
