Welterweight world titleholder Danny Garcia, who has been heavily criticized for his lack of quality opponents over the past three years, will face yet another heavy underdog in his next fight.Garcia will take on Samuel Vargas in a 10-round nontitle bout on Nov. 12 in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions card on Spike, PBC announced Wednesday. The card will take place at the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia, Garcias hometown. A news conference is scheduled for Thursday at the arena.PBC officials announced that the bout will be Garcias final hurdle before his highly anticipated welterweight world title unification showdown against undefeated champion Keith Thurman planned for the first quarter of 2017.Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs), 28, the former unified junior welterweight world champion, vacated his title and moved up to welterweight last year. In January, he won a unanimous decision -- 116-112 on all three scorecards -- against faded Robert Guerrero to win the welterweight title belt vacated by Floyd Mayweather following his retirement in September 2015.But since his a decision victory against Lucas Matthysse in September 2013, Garcia has maintained a soft schedule. Other than eking out a 12-round majority decision against Lamont Peterson in April 2015, Garcia has beaten Guerrero, long-faded former titleholder Paulie Malignaggi, wildly overmatched club fighter Rod Salka and fringe contender Mauricio Herrera, who many thought deserved the decision against Garcia.A Garcia-Thurman showdown is one of the biggest welterweight fights that can be made and would rank as perhaps the most significant fight in PBC history since it debuted in March 2015.Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs), 27, of Clearwater, Florida, is regarded by many as the No. 1 welterweight in the world. He has made three successful title defenses, including a one-sided decision against Guerrero in the first PBC main event, a seventh-round knockout of former titleholder Luis Collazo and a close unanimous decision against former titleholder Shawn Porter on June 25 in a fight-of-the-year candidate.Vargas (25-2-1, 13 KOs), 27, who is from Colombia and based in Canada, has no résumé to speak of against world-class opposition. In his most notable fight, he got crushed in a fourth-round knockout loss to then-prospect Errol Spence Jr., a 2012 U.S. Olympian and now a bona fide contender, in April 2015. Vargas has won five fights in a row since against low-level opposition. In one of the other televised bouts, former junior lightweight titlist Javier Fortuna (30-1-1, 22 KOs), 27, of the Dominican Republic, will face Omar Douglas (17-0, 12 KOs), 25, of Wilmington, Delaware, in a scheduled 10-rounder. According to Sampson Lewkowicz, Fortunas promoter, the fight is contracted at 133 pounds. Junior middleweight prospect Jarrett Hurd (18-0, 12 KOs) will also be on the card.Besides the fight, PBC said Garcia will also discuss details of a charity partnership at the news conference as he looks to give back to his hometown throughout the promotion.Garcia has not fought in Philadelphia since 2010 and will be fighting in his hometown for only the fourth time in his career, which began in 2007. He has fought once previously at the Liacouras Center, scoring a second-round knockout of Enrique Colon in 2009 on the undercard of Philadelphia legend Bernard Hopkins lopsided 12-round decision against Enrique Ornelas. PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox are going in different directions as they head into their final series before the All-Star break. The Phillies, recently thought to be trade-deadline sellers like the White Sox, have played perhaps their best baseball of the season the past last two weeks. Philadelphia has won seven of 10 and now might be a buyer before the deadline. Chicago (36-53) is in the cellar of the A.L. Central and will likely be a target for contending teams looking to add players for a late-season stretch drive. The Phillies and White Sox got an unexpected Friday night off when rain postponed the opener of their weekend series. The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday with games starting at 3:05 and 8:15 p.m. The weather is the only thing that has slowed the Phillies lately. "Our batting average has been going up," manager Charlie Manuel said Friday. "Weve been improving as far as our offence, getting runners on base, things like that." Philadelphia, which won five straight NL East titles from 2007-2011, has won four of its last five series, including taking two of three against division leaders Atlanta and Pittsburgh. The Phillies entered Friday 7 1/2 games behind the Braves in the NL East and need one win to get back to .500 for the first time since June 7. White Sox left-hander John Danks (2-6, 4.31) will face right-hander Jonathan Pettibone (5-3, 3.84) in the doubleheader opener on Saturday. Chicago lefty Hector Santiago (3-5, 3.49) will take on Philadelphias John Lannan (2-3, 4.23) in the nightcap. Manuel hopes the Phillies can carry their hot play into the All-Star break. "It would be real good if we could win a series before we go into the break," Manuel said. "Its what we need to do, start winning series. If you do that every day, youre right there, youre sitting in good position." The White Sox began Friday with the third-worst record in baseball, and they trailed Detroit by 13 games in the AL Central.dddddddddddd. They will likely take a look at young players in the second half. If that happens, manager Robin Ventura said winning wont be sacrificed for development. "You try to teach them the right way to do things," Ventura said Friday. "Ultimately, its to win the game. They have to learn how to win and get better at the same time. Thats part of the process." One young player who has shown promise for the White Sox is Josh Phegley, who was called up last week and homered in three of his first five games. He hit the go-ahead grand slam in Thursdays 6-3 victory over Detroit. The Phillies also have been getting production from young players to climb within reach of playoff contention. Twenty-five year-old Ben Revere, who struggled at the start of the season, has batted .441 while hitting safely in 13 of his last 14 games. He raised his average from .200 on May 1 to .304. Domonic Brown, who was selected to his first All-Star team, has been producing all season. He is hitting .281 with 23 homers and 64 RBIs after securing a job during spring training. "Im very proud of him," Manuel said. "Hes come a long way. He made a big change. Thats what gave him a chance to play, but hes the guy that did it. Hes learned a whole lot in the time hes been here. "Hes very deserving. He was determined. He was going to win a job (in spring training)." The Phillies hope Brown continues to produce. Manuel knows he will need it and more from the rest of the roster. "It takes a very good team to compete, to win a division, to go to the World Series," Manuel said. "It takes a very solid baseball team." NOTES: The White Sox placed right-hander Brian Omogrosso on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 29, with a right triceps strain. . Chicago has lost 29 of 41 and is 17-32 on the road this season. .
