LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury will be very comfortable if his backup quarterback has to take over for the starter for a while.Backup quarterback Nic Shimonek threw for four touchdowns and 271 yards to lead Texas Texas past Kansas 55-19 Thursday night in each teams Big 12 opener. He steps in and plays his tail off, the fourth-year coach said about Shimonek. He threw some incredible passes.Shimonek came in after starter Patrick Mahomes, who also threw for four TDs, got injured in the third quarter.Mahomes, who threw for 277 yards and had one interception, left the game after a 32-yard run that ended with him going down hard on his right shoulder. After being checked briefly on the sideline, he tried to throw one pass before going into the locker room for further evaluation.Mahomes could be OK, Kingsbury said. Asked how he knew that, Kingsbury said jokingly, cause I didnt see the trainer jump off the side of the stadium. We got to get him looked at more extensively, he said. The backups teammates think highly of Shimoneks work ethic. He never complains, said defensive back Justis Nelson. I never hear a bad word coming out of his mouth. He knows all the plays and we dont lose a beat whenever he comes in.Shimonek threw TDs for 4, 37, 31 and 59 yards, while Mahomes scoring strikes were for 14, 18, 17 and 6.Jonathan Giles led Texas Tech (3-1) with 12 catches for 219 yards.Theres a reason their offense is second in the country, Kansas coach David Beaty said. Those dudes can score fast.Giles continues to be Texas Techs go-to guy. They tried to double him at times, but he found a way to get open and once he gets it, he can do stuff with it, Kingsbury said. The defeat for Kansas (1-3) made it 40 straight losses in games away from Lawrence, Kansas. That score did not show how the game went, quarterback Ryan Willis said. I mean, hats off to them, they played their butts off, but we need to bounce back again. Some nights you win, some nights you lose. The Red Raiders have scored at least 50 points in nine straight home games.Beaty switched between QBs Montell Cozart and Ryan Willis.Im sure everybody has their idea of who should be playing quarterback for us, Beaty said. But were with them every day. I evaluate them every day. I see them every day. Our staff sees them every day. We make decisions based on what we see, not what we want.THE TAKEAWAYKANSAS: The Jayhawks took some time to get going against a defense that was giving up 531.3 yards per game coming into the contest. They punted on their first six possessions and didnt get a touchdown until late in the first half after QB Ryan Willis came in for starter Montell Cozart.TEXAS TECH: The Red Raiders offensive line struggled and penalties erased big plays. An ineligible receiver call against Texas Tech negated a 31-yard reception by Derrick Willlies late in the first half. There were also two false start penalties, including one that nixed a 36-yard catch by Reginald Davis that would have given the Red Raiders the ball at the Jayhawks 1. I dont think our O-line played very well, and its something weve got to address, Kingsbury said.UP NEXTKANSAS: The Jayhawks play host to No. 21 TCU on Oct. 8.TEXAS TECH: The Red Raiders travel to Kansas State on Oct. 8.---Follow Betsy Blaney on Twitter at www.twitter.com/betsyblaney---Online: AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.orgManuel Margot Jersey . It was the kind of score that might make everyone else wonder which course he was playing. Except that Graeme McDowell saw the whole thing. Crouched behind the 10th green at Sheshan International, McDowell looked over at the powerful American and said, "Ive probably seen 18 of the best drives Ive seen all year in the last two days. Craig Stammen Jersey . Didier Drogba gave away the penalty that put Senegal one goal away from a major upset, but the veteran striker will get another chance -- probably his last -- at the World Cup after Salomon Kalous injury-time strike sealed the Ivorians place in Brazil next year. http://www.padresrookiestore.com/ . "I wrote 36 on my sheet at the beginning of the game," the Cincinnati coach said, referring the yard line the ball would need to be snapped from. Dave Winfield Jersey . The Vancouver coach and an announced sellout crowd of 18,910 watched in dismay as the Canucks lost 7-4 to the New York Islanders on Monday night by squandering a 3-0 lead in the third period. Saturday, kick-off 14:30 Principality StadiumWales and Rob Howley will look to build on their 24-20 victory over Argentina last weekend when Japan visit Cardiff on Saturday.Wales winning record, eight wins and one defeat, doesnt appear to be under threat from a side that has struggled to find the form which saw them defeat South Africa at last years World Cup and narrowly miss out on qualification to the knock-out stages on bonus points.Despite their victory over the Pumas last week, Wales need to find that killer instinct. They allowed Argentina back into a game that should have been done before the final quarter. It is a much changed Welsh side, but with Gareth Abscombe finally given the keys to the halfback kingdom for the very first time, we could see Wales play without the burden of expectation and with a licence to thrill.Team newsWales have made 10 changes to the team that beat Argentina last weekend, but despite the reshuffle, it is a side that poses a massive attacking threat. Jamie Roberts is restored to a back-line that sees Liam Williams start at full-back and Leigh Halfpenny start on the wing for the first time since the 2011 World Cup. Warburton is given the captains armband while 18 year-old Keelan Giles should make his debut from the replacements bench.Japan have made four changes to the team that beat Georgia last week, with wingers Akihito Yamada and Kenki Rukuoka been giving starting roles. The other changes sees prop Kensuke Hatakeyama and lock Samuela Anise come into the starting fifteen.Wales: Liam Williams, Halfpenny, J Davies, Roberts, Cuthbert, Anscombe, Lloyd Williams; Smith, Baldwin, Lee, Hill, Jones, Lydiate, Warburton, King. Replacements: Dacey, Gill, Andrews, Ball, Moriarty, G Davies, S Davies, Giles.Japan: Matsushima, Yamada, Lafaele, Tatekawa, Fukuoka, Tamura, Tanaka; Nakatani, Horie, Hatakeyama, Kajikawa, Anise, Ilaua, Nunomaki, Mafi. Replacemments: Hino, Yamamoto, Ito, Helu, Matsuhashi, Mimura, Uchida, Lotoahea.dddddddddddd.Key head-to-headIf Japan have any chance of an upset, the boot of Yu Tamura will be vital in keeping the scoreboard ticking over. He tagged on two penalties last week but the one conversion from four tries against Georgia will not be good enough. For Wales, it is a trip into the unknown as Gareth Anscombe takes his first start at fly-half. There is no doubting his ability but whether he can stamp a real claim on the fly-half position is a different story.Key stats* The countries have met on nine occasions. Wales lead the series 8-1.* Wales record win against Japan was a 98-0 success in Cardiff 12 years ago, while Japans sole victory came in the 2013 summer tour, in a 23-8 win in Tokyo.* Wales have scored a total of 289 points during four previous Test match encounters at home against Japan.* Japans victory over Georgia in Tbilisi last weekend was their first win since Jamie Joseph took over as head coach.WeatherThe weather in Cardiff is never an issue with the roof at the Principality but it will be dry and cloudy for the game.VerdictWales have far too much firepower in their back-line and if they get an early score, will go on to record a comprehensive victory. The tries will come but nothing less than a demolition against Japan will do. Keenan Giles should be unleashed and his performance will also answer questions on whether hes ready for the international Test arena. With Liam Williams at full-back, any aimless kicking from Japan is going to be punished. Wales have stuttered so far in the autumn series and this provides them with a perfect opportunity to answer critics and lay down a marker ahead of the visit of South Africa next week. Expect them to win by 30.
